How do you build a marriage that lasts? What does a "happily ever after" in reality look like?

Licensed therapist Jonathan Decker and filmmaker Alan Seawright are taking another look at Shrek and Fiona's relationship, focusing on their married life. They talk about expectations in relationships, handling the pressures and fears of parenthood, and nurturing a relationship amid the hectic reality of life with children. Jonathan talks about embracing the messiness of a real "happily ever after," and Alan looks back on his own fears of parenthood.

I've been lucky that my mom is like the queen in that she's been accepting of whomever I bring home (also a bad*ss as my mom can leg press almost 600lbs). I've also seen a Really funny comparison of Shrek 2 and the movie Get Out in how similar the plots are. Not saying my parents are perfect (undiagnosed adhd autistic so lots of cpstd) but my mom at least is getting better and my sibling bond over making fun of her crumby parenting

Also with babies, I'm not or ever been interested in having my own, but I love babies and little kids, most of the time, and have been So protective of my baby cousins and babies starting to talk and learning how words work, but I also very much like giving them back after lol

So when my 3 children were in different stages of adolescents, I was also going through early menopause. I went to the dr. and my blood pressure was high he told me that I needed to relax and I offered to let him take the 3 of them home with him.

I will say that hubs and I have the success we have because we're friends first and foremost. We Fell In Weird with each other and that basis means we hugely respect eachother's needs/boundaries/pain, etc. We don't have kids (I love them but working with them is enough for now! 🤭), but the challenges we HAVE faced were only survivable because we love, and respect, the heck out of eachother. We've been reeeally dang lucky over the years.

Everything about this video is so poignant that I’m glad I noticed Alan’s Perd Hapley shirt at the very end so I wasn’t distracted the entire time by how amazing it is 😂

How do you manage to teach me good expectations of future parenting through a short video about Shrek while also making me lose my mind laughing with your fantastic shenanigans? You guys are truly such a blessing 🤣. "Ah luhv you daddeh." "Don't call me daddeh." 🤣🤣🤣

I finally understand something. My family and I are chaos people.

The whole “parents don’t immediately feel light and joy when meeting their newborn” thing always reminds me, of all things, of a ‘Frasier’ quote. “I’m gonna tell you something I didn’t learn until I became a father: You don’t just love your children … you *fall in love* with them.” (No kidding, that show had some really good life lessons.)
