Alan:

Hello Heroes!

February! It should be cold and snowy outside! But it’s been… April weather for us in Utah? I need to do yardwork!

What I’m reading!

Iron Gold by Pierce Brown. The first of the 2nd trilogy of Roman Empire But In Space books from Pierce Brown. These books are fun. The technology doesn’t make a lick of sense, but they’re super-fun. Kinda like Star Wars, but without Space Magic. And it gets me my daily thought about the Roman Empire!

Defiant by Brandon Sanderson. I’m a huge Brandon Sanderson fan. I’ve pretty much loved every book of his I’ve read (nearly all of them). The Skyward books… just didn’t do it for me. I really liked the first one. And it’s been diminishing returns since then. Bummer. But it did give me a really solid idea for a space fighter pilot movie (series?) so… Maybe not all is lost?

What I’m watching!

Bob Marley: One Love. I wasn’t a fan. It’s a muddled story, and the non-linear aspect was poorly executed. I understand that they were trying to avoid the cliches of a music biopic, but they A) didn’t, and B) made it hard to understand what was happening, who people were, and why they were important to Marley. That being said, of course the music was great, and the performances from the two leads were GREAT. When the script gave them things to do.

What I’m playing!

Stupid amounts of Retro Bowl. Seriously, I’m starting to think I might have a problem.

Really busy this month, but most of that busy-ness is getting stuff ready for you all! 2024 is going to be an exciting year!

Watch Movies! (And television, and read books, and play video games)

Jono:

Hi everyone! This month I'm super excited for the final season of Star Wars: The Bad Batch as well as the return of The Rookie. Two of my favorite shows! In the case of the former, Dave Filoni and company are working overtime to explain The Emperor's return decades later in the canon, and it's kind of working for me!In the case of the latter, super fun cop show that somehow strikes a balance between honoring decent police officers while addressing major issues with race, violence, and sexism in that field. Come for Nathan Fillion, stay for the whole ensemble!Went to see Bob Marley: One Love this week. Too many biopic cliches, but the performances and the central theme (your struggles are the source of your power), along with a KILLER soundtrack, made it worth the watch in my book.Taking a break from all my clinical reading to enjoy some classic literature: The Count of Monte Cristo by Alexandre Dumas. One of the greatest novels ever written, and an inspiration for so many other beloved stories!

What about you all? What have you been watching and reading this month?

Ah, the Count of Monte Cristo by Alexandre Dumas. Dumbass...? Love the book, but every time it's straight to Shawshank Redemption.

Alex Boynton

I’m re-reading the Harry Potter series, currently on Order of the Phoenix, Umbridge makes my blood boil in real life.

LOVE these lists! Alan, have you read Wheel of Time? Sanderson did an excellent job of finishing off that book series and if you were to review Amazon Prime's adaptation on CT (it's a tv show, I know I know, but I have to ask) you could maybe get Sanderson to guest? ;) Currently reading a ton of romance as pure fun escapism and recent excellent examples are: Honey and Spice, Bolu Babalola (note, this and the next two have explicit scenes) Book Lover, Emily Henry Thank You For Listening, Julia Whelan (even better in audio, because Whelan is a renowned audio narrator and this is [chef's kiss]) Anything by Mhairi McFarlane, though these get HEAVY so they are less escapism but they are also laugh out loud funny YA: When Dimple Met Rishi, Sandhya Manon "Serious" reading: Diving back into "Learned Optimism" by Martin Seligman--something I struggle a great deal with but every hard-fought tiny step I take pays huge dividends Finishing "The Opposite of Butterfly Hunting" by Evanna Lynch, and it's been engrossing (especially on audio--another that's read by the author, an accomplished actor)

I recently saw two interesting movies that might even be CT-worthy, especially the second. First was The Taste of Things, a French film featuring Juliette Binoche. A film about love, loss, friendship, and the simple things in life. Especially amazing food. The second was Perfect Days, a Japanese film nominated for Oscars International Film. It was simple. Again, a man living a simple life and taking pleasure in the simple things, in routine. He’s confronted with family members from his past, and in the end I think contemplates his future, and is acted so beautifully. I loved the way they showed dream sequences and the passage of time. As for reading? Really poorly written Football Romances (and yes, it is a thing! Hockey Romance seems to be more popular though. Who knew? 🤷🏼‍♀️). They’re simple, mindless, and all have a happy ending so I keep reading. And thanks to Kindle Unlimited they’re free. But they’ve also proven to me that if she can write a book then I can too.

Every year, I watch EVERYTHING nominated for Oscars! It's quite the list! Do you watch them Alan? I'd love an rundown episode of your thoughts if you do! I only have 1 left for the Best Picture category. Such a strong year for Best Picture. My favs filmmaking wise would have to be Anatomy of a Fall and The Zone of Interest.

Andrew Feistner

Last night I started the FX version of the Shogun mini series and I can’t wait to see more. Finally got Helldivers 2 the other night and I’m hoping to spread some democracy soon. And I finished reading For the Wolf by Hannah Whitten, it wasn’t my thing even though finding a new twist on Red Riding Hood is neat. Also I’m really excited for Final Fantasy 7 Rebirth tomorrow, and Dune Part II!

Currently reading The Thick and the Lean by Chana Porter for my book club. I'm having a hard time getting into it. Very intriguing concept, but just not well executed in ny opinion. The characters are one dimensional and the world building is confusing. This book doesn't know what it's trying to be, it's all over the place. Pick a lane!

Ayesha Ali

In the last month roughly, I read Fireborne by Rosaria Munda (absolutely fabulous twist on a rebellion and dragons that explores the immense difficulty of bad guy vs good guy), and The Last Graduate by Naomi Novik (I wouldn't say she's a favorite author of mine, but man did that book grab me and suck me all the way to the end. Couldn't finish it fast enough). I also read Defy the Night, but I think that was january. For movies, last week I watched the first Cars movie after sooooooo long, and wow, awesome movie. And rewatched The Marvels (I thought it was good in the theaters, but it fell pretty flat for me in my living room. Bree larson sounded like a gen z teenager, and Kamala Khan sounded twelve. Only Monica Rambo was interesting to me, and she hardly got any time to shine.)

Deadinside

Also been reading some brandon Sanderson with revisiting Mistborn, still one of my favorite books and I end up loving the concepts all over again coming back to it

This month, I’ve been focused on reading nonfiction about black history. I read Nikki Giovanni “A Good Cry: What We Learn from Tears and Laughter”. This book truly helped me through a recent rough emotional time remembering my mother. I reread “My Bondage and My Freedom” by Frederick Douglass. I just started “On Juneteenth” by Annette Gordon-Reed. I’ve been watching “Avatar: The Last Airbender”, and binge watched “Fargo” Season 5 a couple weeks ago, which was AMAZING

Smidge

I should re-read TCOMC. It's been aaaages. There's an anime adaptation from a while ago that REALLY took off for its unique and dizzying visuals, and I never did get around to watching it. Better add it to the Watch pile! 🤭

Wayward Ace

Love Alexandre Dumas’ books! I only learned a few years ago that he was black, definitely a cool fact to know!

Lydia Hartzler

Alan and I definitely have the same taste in books lol - I stuck with the Skyward series but did have to push myself to finish it, and I'm about to re-read the Red Rising trilogy so I can read the 2nd trilogy (since it's now complete and I don't have to wait to read all of it...). I'm about to finish reading Mercedes Lackey's trilogy, The Founding of Valdemar. I rewatched all the Jurassic Park and Jurassic World movies because I could and rewatched the Knives Out movies because they're awesome. Also, I am SOOO excited to see Dune 2 this weekend!

BJ

Let's see, I just watched The Marvels. I didn't have high expectations, so I can't say I was very disappointed. Recently I've been reading the Dresden Files. I do enjoy a magic filled urban fantasy although I'm not sure I'll continue on. Dresden's angsty Oh Woe Is Me I'm So Misunderstood is starting to get a little old after the fourth book. I may stick with it just to see if he grows up a little. Last night I clicked on Xena Warrior Princess just for S&Gs and I admit that I did enjoy it as much as I did when I first watched it in the 90's. I had forgotten how gloriously horrible the costumes were. Do I admit that I tried to watch The VelociPastor but couldn't last 15 minutes? Actually, let's just not talk about The VelociPastor...

Katherine Clarke

Also really excited for the Bad Batch! Hoping for a certain fellow to develop proper accountability and have a complete redemption arc. Very impressed by the heavy lifting the show is doing to explain the Emperor's clone project and continuing to adore Omega and to want to adopt all the poor betrayed clones as my sons.

EmAtinyDragon

Alan - ooh Roman Empire? I am intrigued. Have been interested in the Roman Empire ever since seeing my all-time favorite movie, Gladiator. I have been listening to the Inheritance Games series within the last few days, definitely a binge worthy series. Also currently listening to The Song of Achilles. Jono - have you ever watched the movie adaptation of The Count of Monte Cristo with Jim Caviezel & Guy Pearce? One of my favorites from the 2000s, although I am not sure how true an adaptation is having never finished the book.

Michael Emerson

Yeah honestly I love Sanderson but the Skyward books rang a bit hollow for me. I was desperately waiting for Spin to finally be with her team but only got traces of that in the final book. Here's hoping the newer books feature more of that aspect and less of the lone renegade doing everything on her own.

Elizabeth McDowell

I’m also loving the return of The Rookie! Such a good show. 💚🚔

Nova Villmark

You guys have great taste in books! I LOVED the Count of Monte Cristo (best Dumas book IMHO) and I'm also reading Dark Age, the book right after Iron Gold. Ya'll need to hop onto the Broken Earth series if you haven't done so yet.

Kate M

I’m reading Frankenstein right now, one of my favorite books. I just watched Wonka this weekend, and loved it so much. The kids saw it in the theater with friends and have had the soundtrack playing ever since…

Kara

Reading Long Live The Pumpkin Queen by Shea Ernshaw. The words are so gloriously rich I wish I could physically slide in the pages, and swim in this book. It is beyond a wonderful sequel to Jack and Sally's story after The Nightmare before Christmas. Watching (again) 1943's The More The Merrier directed by George Stevens bc it's charmingly funny and filled with lovely details of the time. Also watched Malena starring my favorite actress Monica Bellucci. So beautiful and sad.

Carolina Silva

Would you consider doing Coda? I cried more than Alan.

Just finished up reading “A Man’s Search for Meaning” based off of Joni’s many references throughout your videos. It did not disappoint. I’ve read many a Holocaust Memoir and this one just hit different. 100% recommend to anyone who hasn’t picked it up yet. I also am working my way through “The Awe of God” by John Bevere and it’s another inspiring yet challenging read. This is a Christian book, and it may not appeal to other worldviews, just a fair warning. As a Christ follower, I found it to be a very insightful look into what it truly means to fear God in a biblical sense, and a useful tool in my personal introspection of my current spiritual health. Love everything Cinema Therapy has been doing and the beautiful community it has formed!
