Hello everyone! 😊✨

It’s time for a new creative exercise! This time a Morocco-inspired one! We’re focusing on one of the most iconic features of Moroccan architecture: doors and windows!

Exercise 1: Discover Moroccan doors & windows

Start by gathering some references to get inspired! You can also use the references I included in this post. Moroccan doors and windows are known for a few things:

Arched shapes: Many doors and windows are built with horseshoe or keyhole arches.

Complicated details: Doors often feature carved wood, brass studs, or elaborate ironwork. Windows may include lattice patterns or mashrabiya screens.

Vibrant colours: You’ll often find doors in bright blues, greens, and earthy reds.

Take a few moments to look at photos of doors and windows from cities like Marrakech, Chefchaouen, and Fez to get a sense of how they look. 🤗

Exercise 2: Draw Moroccan doors

Let’s start by focusing on doors. Fill a spread with different kind of doors you found. You can follow these steps:

Step 1: Begin by drawing the general outline of your door. Many Moroccan doors are arched, so draw a soft arch at the top.

Step 2: Once the basic shape is in place, start adding details, like:

Draw wooden panels or brass studs that decorate the door.

Draw the patterns if the door has any.

You don't have to include all the patterns and details, choose which one you want to include!

Step 3: Use shading to show the texture of the door.

Exercise 3: Draw Moroccan windows

Now that you’ve drawn a door, let’s move on to windows. Moroccan windows often feature decorative elements like latticework or arched frames. You can fill out another spread and follow these steps:

Step 1:  Again, start by drawing the basic shape of the window. Like doors, many windows are arched. You can also choose a square or rectangular window with a decorative frame.

Step 2: Moroccan windows often have mashrabiya, which is a detailed latticework.

Step 3: Add shading and texture to give your windows depth. Think about how the light would hit the details, or how the shadows would fall through the latticework.

Sharing your work ✨

I'm so excited about what you guys will create with this exercise! If you want to, you can share them in our group chat: Creative Practice chat 🤗

I hope you like this exercise! 😊
