Hi everyone! 😊

In this little blog post, I will talk about how my trip to Italy helped me start drawing again after experiencing an art block for years.

I visited Tuscany in the summer of 2023 during an Interrail road trip. Before this trip, I had almost stopped drawing entirely. Whenever I started a new drawing, and it didn’t work out immediately, I would give up and not touch a pencil for months. I think I was afraid I lost my ability to draw.

I went on this Interrail trip with a friend, and we talked about bringing some art supplies along to draw on location and reconnect with our creative side. We began dedicating more time on our holiday to sketching and capturing the places we visited. In Florence, I saw many artists that were selling their paintings.

I loved to draw again, it made me happy and more relaxed, and I saw more details in my surroundings. I also learned to draw/illustrate with colours instead of only using grey pencils or a black pen.

In one of the hostels, I met someone who was attending art school in England. He had a small sketchbook where he captured all kinds of different scenes from his trip. It was so inspiring to flip through his sketches. He told me that one of his secrets was drawing every day and letting go of perfectionism.

He told me you can only improve if you let yourself make mistakes. This conversation, and the time I spent drawing during the trip, reminded me of how much I missed creating art and how deeply I wanted to pursue my dream of becoming an illustrator/artist!

I think it turned out to be one of the most important holidays for my artistic career! After the holiday I attended an Art Course where I learned so much, and I lost a lot of my perfectionism in making art, which I’m so grateful for!!

Have you ever experienced an artistic block that you couldn't get over? What helped you to create again? 😊

and how did you come to loose the perfectionism in making art? what made you to do this? 😘

I challenged myself to make mistakes and turning the thoughts around. Instead of: 'Oh no it didn't work out as I wanted too, I just can't do it' to 'Okay I made a mistake, I don't like it, but this helps me grow and next time I know what to do differently' This helped me a lot! 😊 But I'm still perfectionistic, that's a character thing I think I will never loose
