Good morning everyone! ๐Ÿค—

It's time for another drawing exercise! This week we are practicing with quick sketches while being forced to lose our perfectionism.

My tip for this exercise: Enjoy the process and let yourself make mistakes! ๐Ÿ˜Š

We will be sketching the following reference 3 times, so in the end, you will have 3 different sketches.

Materials ๐ŸŽจ

I used a few brush pens and my dark indigo pencil for this challenge. Using different materials definitely made it more difficult to draw quickly. But because these are my go-to mediums, I definitely wanted to try it out.

You can also just use a pencil or one brush pen colour!

These are the materials I used in my sketches:

Tombow 991 (Light Ocre)

Tombow 126 (Light olive)

Tombow 912 (Pale Cherry)

Ecoline 374 (Pink Beige)

Faber-Castell 157 (Dark Indigo)

First Sketch (30 seconds):

Set the timer for 30 seconds and draw the reference as quickly as possible. Focus on the basic shapes and don't worry about details.

Donโ€™t be afraid if it looks messy or incomplete.

As you can see, I definitely didn't finish my first drawing! It was my first attempt to draw in 30 seconds using different brush pens, it was quite the challenge!

Second Sketch (2 minutes):

Set the timer for 2 minutes. With this extra time, add more detail, but still focus on the main shapes. Only add the most important details, while still keeping it loose.

As you can see, I had more time to draw more buildings. It also helped that I made a quicker sketch before, so I already knew what the main shapes were!

Third Sketch (5 minutes):

Set the timer for 5 minutes. Now you can add further details and shading. You can focus on refining your drawing, but still stay mindful of not overthinking itโ€”allow some room for mistakes or imperfections.

This time I had lots of time to add more details, however, this also made it hard to choose which details to add and which not. It's a great timeframe to practice with choosing which details are the most important.

Reflection ๐Ÿ‘€

Look at all three sketches. How did it feel to start with a 30-second sketch? Did it make you more comfortable with the idea of imperfection? What changed in your approach as the time limits got longer?

Tell me in the comment section!

Happy creating! ๐Ÿค—

This was a fun exercise! Limiting the colour palette was fun. I barely got anything down in 30s

Happy to hear that!!! Yess 30 seconds is a big challenge! But it helps you to already simplify the reference in your mind. Which makes it easier to simplify your illustration when you have more time ๐Ÿ˜Š
