Good morning everyone!! 🤗

For this month’s drawing exercise, we’ll focus on simplifying elements from nature. A great way to improve your visual library and make drawing landscapes feel easier and more intuitive 😊

Exercise: Simplifying Nature Elements

1. Choose 3 subjects

Pick three nature elements you’d like to practice simplifying. Here are some ideas (feel free to choose others too!):

Mountains

Trees

Grass

Rocks

2. Gather your references

For each subject, find 4–6 reference images:

Some from a distance

Some close up

And a few in between

This variety will help you understand the forms at different scales.

3. Create 3 different spreads in your sketchbook

Create one sketchbook spread per subject. Focus on breaking each element down into simple shapes and forms, rather than details. You can find some inspiration on how to approach this exercise below.

I started with a brush pen base layer with Tombow 126 (Light Olive). Then I used Faber-Castell Burnt Siena & Chrome Oxide Green to add details!

Sharing

As always, I’d love to see your results! Post your sketches in our group chat or in the comments below. I can’t wait to see what you create! 🤗

Happy drawing!

Celyn 🌸
