Portugal Doors: Sketchbook Study ๐จ๐ธ (Step-by-step Illustrations - Week 12) (Patreon)
Content
Hi Patrons!! ๐ค
For this week we will be doing a Portugal door study. You can choose your favorite ones from the references and create a sketchbook spread. You will find my tips, base layers and final illustrations, together with the materials I used, down below ๐ค๐ฅฐ
My tips to draw doors:
Start with simple shapesLightly create a rectangle for the doors. Keeping the base simple makes it easier to add details later.
Add architectural detailsInclude elements like door panels, handles, mail slots, ironwork, or small windows. These small details give each door its own character.
Build depth with colored pencilsUse pencils to add shadows around panels, edges, and frames.
Outline selectivelyInstead of outlining everything, emphasize only key edges (like panel borders or handles). This keeps the drawing soft and sketchy
Add life around the doorSmall elements like plants, vines, steps, or flower pots make the door feel part of a building and tell a little story.
Use color swatches while workingTest your colors next to the drawing so you can see how combinations work before adding them to the door.
Donโt aim for perfectionSlightly uneven lines and loose coloring give the doors charm and a hand-drawn feel.
