Hi!! 🤗
I had so much fun drawing this week's references! Especially the old building with the arched gate! I loved this one so much that I'm also going to use it for this month's worksheet, which I will post this Wednesday!
You will find my tips & step by step instructions from base layer to final illustrations below, together with the materials I used!
Tips
Here are some tips for this month's references:
Draw your own version of the references: Use the reference as an idea, and create your own illustrations by adding an extra flowers, skipping a flower, adding an extra leaf, etc. Just play with it and have fun!
Use more colors than usual: Most of the time I try to draw with a limited color palette, but sometimes it's so much fun to use many colors in one illustration! It makes the illustration more whimsical as well 🥰
Keep the background soft: The grass, greenery or flowers in the background don't need details, keep them soft and blurry!
Create depth: When you think you are finished, look a second time at your illustration and see if there is enough depth in it. You can always add more by using Dark Indigo!
Enjoy the imperfections: Loose illustrations look more lively because they're not too perfect. Focus on capturing the feeling and the colors of the place rather than every tiny detail.
Old House
I used the following Brush pens as a base layer:
Tombow 126 (Light olive)
Tombow 133 (Chartreuse, Light green)
Tombow 912 (Pale Cherry)
Tombow 990 (Light Sand) (Or you can use Ecoline 374, Pink Beige)
Tombow 553 (Mist purple)
Start by drawing the walls of the house with Light Sand, make sure to get the proportions right. Then Use Light Olive to draw the greenery on the walls. Use Light Green to draw the grass and lighter parts of the greenery. Use Pale Cherry for the rooftops and Mist Purple for the windows.
For the second layer, I used the following colored pencils:
Faber-Castell 157 (Dark Indigo)
Faber-Castell 278 (Chrome Oxide Green)
Faber-Castell 283 (Burnt Siena)
Faber-Castell 188 (Sanguine)
Faber-Castell 108 (Dark Cadmium Yellow)
Use Burnt Siena for the rooftops, walls, windows and the shading in the arched gate. Use sanguine to add details to the rooftops by drawing lines in the same angle as the rooftop. Use Chrome Oxide Green for all the greenery, and if you want you can add some flowers with Dark Cadmium yellow. Use Dark indigo to add some extra depth to the illustration.
Flowers 🌸✨
I used the following Brush pens as a base layer:
Tombow 126 (Light olive)
Tombow 133 (Chartreuse, Light green)
Tombow 553 (Mist purple)
Tombow 772 (Dusty rose)
Tombow 020 (Peach)
First, draw the flowers with peach, mist purple and dusty rose. Then add the leafs, stems and grass with Light Olive and Light Green. Here is an example of how I build the first layer. First I draw all the details, and then I add the background.
For the second layer, I used the following colored pencils:
Faber-Castell 278 (Chrome Oxide Green)
Faber-Castell 226 (Alizarin Crimson)
Faber-Castell 133 (Magenta)
Faber-Castell 108 (Dark Cadmium Yellow)
For the second layer, start by drawing the flowers, I started with Dark Cadmium yellow for the yellow flowers, giving them some leafs. Then I used Alizarin crimson to add details to the pink flowers and Magenta for the purple one.
Use Chrome Oxide Green to add stems, leafs and shading to the foreground and background.
Wishing you all lots of fun with this week's references! Don't hesitate to ask me any questions or to show your illustrations in the group chat 🤗
