Hi!! 🤗
In this post I will talk you through the two steps of creating an illustration with brush pens & pencils based on this week's references 🥰
You will find my tips & instructions from base layer to final illustrations below, together with the materials I used!
Tips
Here are some tips for this month's references:
Draw your own version of the references: Use the reference as an idea, and create your own illustrations by adding an extra flowers, skipping a flower, adding an extra leaf, etc. Just play with it and have fun!
Use more colors than usual: Most of the time I try to draw with a limited color palette, but sometimes it's so much fun to use many colors in one illustration! It makes the illustration more whimsical as well 🥰
Keep the background soft: The grass, greenery or flowers in the background don't need details, keep them soft and blurry!
Create depth: When you think you are finished, look a second time at your illustration and see if there is enough depth in it. You can always add more by using Dark Indigo!
Enjoy the imperfections: Loose illustrations look more lively because they're not too perfect. Focus on capturing the feeling and the colors of the place rather than every tiny detail.
The four trees
I used the following Brush pens as a base layer:
Tombow 126 (Light olive)
Ecoline 374, (Pink Beige)
Tombow 133 (Chartreuse, Light green)
Start by drawing the leaves of the four trees with light olive. Notice how different they are, compared to each other. They are the same kind of trees, but they all have a different character. Draw the trunks of the trees with pink beige and the grass with light green. Use Light Olive to add a darker green row between the trunks of the trees.
For the second layer, I used the following colored pencils:
Faber-Castell 157 (Dark Indigo)
Faber-Castell 278 (Chrome Oxide Green)
Faber-Castell 283 (Burnt Siena)
Use Chrome Oxide Green for the trees and the grass. Look closely where to add shading. Tip: the sun is coming from te left side.
Use Burnt siena to add shading to the trunks by adding one thick line to the right side and a soft line to the left.
To finish your illustration, you can use Dark Indigo to create more contrast and darker shading in the leaves and the trunks of the trees.
Seaside house
I used the following Brush pens as a base layer:
Tombow 126 (Light olive)
Tombow 912 (Pale Cherry)
Tombow 020 (Peach)
Tombow 991 (Light Ocre)
Tombow 451 (Sky Blue)
Ecoline 374 (Pink Beige)
Tombow 553 (Mist purple)
Draw the house with Light Ochre, leave some space for the windows. Use Mist purple for the rooftop and the windows. Draw the yellow field with Peach and the trees with Light Olive. Use Pale cherry to draw a line for the shore of the island in the background. Use Light Olive for the hills and Pink Beige for the sand dunes. Use Sky blue for the sea.
For the second layer, I used the following colored pencils:
Faber-Castell 157 (Dark Indigo)
Faber-Castell 278 (Chrome Oxide Green)
Faber-Castell 283 (Burnt Siena)
Faber-Castell 188 (Sanguine)
Faber-Castell 108 (Dark Cadmium Yellow)
For the second layer, start by tracing the outlines of the house with Burnt Siena. Use Dark Indigo for the rooftop and the windows. Use Dark Cadmium Yellow to create direction in the yellow field. Use Chrome Oxide Green for the trees, the green parts in the yellow field and the hills on the island. Add Sanguine to the trees and the sand dunes. Create shading in the water with Dark Indigo and use Burnt Siena to create more contrast between the water and the island by tracing the outlines of the hills.
Have fun with these references! 🥰
And as always, don't hesitate to ask me any questions or to show your illustrations in the group chat 🤗
