Hi!! π€
In this post I will talk you through the two steps of creating an illustration with brush pens & pencils based on this week's references π₯°
You will find my tips & instructions from base layer to final illustrations below, together with the materials I used!
Tips
Here are some tips for this month's references:
Draw your own version of the references: Use the reference as an idea, and create your own illustrations by adding an extra flowers, skipping a flower, adding an extra leaf, etc. Just play with it and have fun!
Use more colors than usual: Most of the time I try to draw with a limited color palette, but sometimes it's so much fun to use many colors in one illustration! It makes the illustration more whimsical as well π₯°
Keep the background soft: The grass, greenery or flowers in the background don't need details, keep them soft and blurry!
Create depth: When you think you are finished, look a second time at your illustration and see if there is enough depth in it. You can always add more by using Dark Indigo!
Enjoy the imperfections: Loose illustrations look more lively because they're not too perfect. Focus on capturing the feeling and the colors of the place rather than every tiny detail.
Sunlight through the trees
I used the following Brush pens as a base layer:
Tombow 126 (Light olive)
Tombow 990 (Light Sand) or Ecoline 374 (Pink Beige)
Tombow 133 (Chartreuse, Light green)
Tombow 603 (Periwinkle)
Start by drawing the trees with light sand, leave some white space open at the right side where the sun is shining on the trunks. Use light olive to add some moss to a few trunks. Use periwinkle to draw the purple flowers, light green for the parts where the sun comes through and light olive for the darker greenery.
For the second layer, I used the following colored pencils:
Faber-Castell 157 (Dark Indigo)
Faber-Castell 278 (Chrome Oxide Green)
Faber-Castell 283 (Burnt Siena)
Use Burnt Siena for the tree trunks. Use Chrome Oxide Green for alle the greenery. For the purple flowers you can use Dark Indigo to create some shading. You can use Dark Indigo to add some extra depth to the trees as well by adding a second layer on top of Burnt Siena.
Tree hills
I used the following Brush pens as a base layer:
Tombow 126 (Light olive)
Tombow 133 (Chartreuse, Light green)
Tombow 912 (Pale Cherry)
Tombow 991 (Light Ocre)
Draw the hill with Light Olive and Light Ocre. Use Light olive for the trees as well. Use Light Green for the grass. Draw the branch and twigs of the big tree with Pale Cherry. Use Light Olive for the leaves.
For the second layer, I used the following colored pencils:
Faber-Castell 157 (Dark Indigo)
Faber-Castell 278 (Chrome Oxide Green)
Faber-Castell 283 (Burnt Siena)
Faber-Castell 188 (Sanguine)
Faber-Castell 108 (Dark Cadmium Yellow)
For the second layer, start by drawing the leaves of the big tree in front of the landscape. Use Burnt Siena for the branch and add a second layer of dark indigo to create even more depth. Use Light Olive to give the little trees some shading and detail, add some shading to the grass and the hill as well. Use Burnt Siena to add some trunks and branches. Use Dark Cadmium yellow to add a bit more yellow tones to the landscape by putting a layer on top of the light ocre. Use Sanguine to add some extra detail to the hill.
Have fun with these references! π₯°
And as always, don't hesitate to ask me any questions or to show your illustrations in the group chat π€
