It has been a while since the characters have mentioned it, but they're technically in a dream world, which runs on different rules than reality. If they learn to exploit those different rules, thing might get a lot easier for them.

It occurs to me that Pirate Honey is going to say that she <i>knew</i> that the goop was going to set David free. It was all part of the plan, but she couldn't say it, or it would give it all away.
