Some people asked about Friday's appt. I met with my surgical oncologist, the navigator, two nurses and the scheduler. It was a very long appointment. My surgeon says I'm lucky because I have ER/PR+ HER2 - breast cancer (Stage 1) and that its the slowest growing type of breast cancer. I had a choice of a lumpectomy w/ radiation or a mastectomy (which may or may not need radiation but we won't know until the pathology after the surgery.

She said that both choices would be the same chance of recurrence regardless but with a full mastectomy and reconstruction I might be able to skip radiation. I will also need genetic testing to see if I have the BRCA gene.

I've decided to go with the mastectomy and reconstruction (which they do by giving me a tummy tuck, so winning) and after the pathology they'll know whether I need radiation or chemo or both and which medication I'll be on for the next 5 to 10 years. Its three separate surgeries across about 6 months but its better than dying of cancer.

I also have new health insurance as of the first so all of my costs should be covered except my deductable which I will meet probably in the first week with the rates on these surgeries and cancer meds. Levine Cancer Instuitute has a great integrative medicine program that will allow me to do things like acupuncture and massage at a discounted price.

I will now also be able to get my biologic covered and my oncologist says that I can take the medication even through treatment. Another cool thing is that (with the exception of my dermatologist) my entire care team is women from my primary all the way to my onocologist, my surgeon, my two plastic surgeons and the genetics person I have to meet with. I know it sounds silly but having women deal with my boobs just makes me feel better. LOL.

Its definitely going to be a really long road but luckily my job consists of sitting on my ass typing and this shouldn't interfere physically with my job. Mentally, I will probably have some off days and obviously right after my major surgery there will be some downtime but the other surgeries should be outpatient. Thank you guys for checking in on me and always being patient with me.

My mom is a 3x survivor. First time lumpectomy and 36 radiation treatments. Second within 5 yrs on tomaxfin (sp) and did bilateral mastectomy and reconstructive surgery. Third time happened after she went in to replace the implants and the surgeon left the incision open. Needless to say it’s a mess now. So I’m all too familiar with your situation and Im praying all good things for you, your support system and your team. xx hard to help so far away but anything needed i would think anyone of us would help immediately 🫶🏼

Having an all women team is awesome. My team were all women too and it makes a real difference in care and understanding. Even with all the scary in what you posted there is so much positive and having a plan in place takes a lot of the scary manageable. Good luck hugs and much positive energy sent your way. I kept a diary during that time. It was a safe spot for me to say I'm scared,I'm angry and any other stray thought. It's been 7 years I've never revisited it. Maybe one day.

Sending hugs. As someone with a BRCA gene. I have lived with that cloud above my head for years. My mom was 49 stage 4 so am definitely good to catch it early. I am getting a double mastectomy in November FINALLY with no reconstruction but if they had offered me a tummy tuck I would’ve jumped on that too!!

Wendy Ragan Poplin

Sounds like the best outcome for this situation. I wish you all the luck and prayers you deserve. All of my doctors, surgeon's and Specialists are women because I feel like I don't have anything they don't have and they understand recovery from a female standpoint ❤️❤️

Jennifer-HEAorGTFO

I did the lumpectomy and radiation. I wasn’t given a choice. Probably would have had them cut off if I could have. Radiation lifts the boob and makes the tissue denser so I’ve got a high and tight one, “Survivor”, and my natural ddd, “Big Mama.” I’m 6 years out, couldn’t do the meds after, so I’m just keeping my fingers crossed that it stays gone. Best wishes to you. I’m glad you’ve got good insurance.

Onley James

Yeah you should have seen the way my eyes bulged at that. I was like a tummy tuck??? Really?

Jennifer McQueen

My mom had a double mastectomy a number of years ago, they did both the mastectomy and reconstruction at the same time. She was in surgery for about 16 hours longest time of my life. Funny story about her surgery was she was originally a b cup and wanted to stay a b cup. They didn't have those in stock so they had to special order them. However she happened to have her surgery scheduled during the worst snow storm in DC in years. As a result her boots got lost somewhere in Atlanta and unless she wanted to postpone the surgery she had to go up to a couple cup. So needless to say she went up a cup size. All this to say YOU GOT THIS!!! I will light a candle for you!

Sara

So glad to hear that things seem positive ❤️❤️ and I can totally understand the preference of women doctors, I had a physical that turned into a surprise pap and was so thankful the two drs and nurse were girls, having strangers stare into my kitty cat like a crystal ball is already stressful.

Kari

Sending you hugs and peace and all the best! This all sounds really good so far. I’m so glad you have a great cancer center near you!

Angelina (Charlies version) ♟️

AHHH so glad to hear good news!!! And I'm happy that it seems you're feeling more hopeful!!! And that you got better insurance and feel safe with your care team!! Best news I couldve asked for! Wishing you peace and healing. Relax and move at your own pace during recovery. I remember after my first cancer surgery I was almost too weak to hold up a book, but I could read them on my phone, then watch the movie version without even getting up. It was a lifesaver and thankfully we have technology and medical science that is as advanced as it is, it does give us less to worry about.

Nikki Mitchell

I had the same options but with radiation let me tell you the b reduction was the best part going from tucking the girls in to not needing a bra is the best feeling ever. The radiation wasn't as scary as I thought it was just hard during the last 4 visits But gurl...ringing that bell if you can do it Its worth all the work you have done. From on survivor to the next big hugs

Kristine 💜

Sending you all the healthy vibes

Thank you so much for the update. Learning about your diagnosis a few weeks ago came on top of my husband getting let go and my friend’s miscarriage. When I read your post I lost it, sobbing like a maniac, but was lucky enough to have a supportive husband who understands me and my empathic limits/neurosis 😅 I work as a philanthropy writer for a semi-well-known Cancer Institute in Boston MA—aka writing proposals asking people for money for cancer research. I know everyone’s cancer journey is different, but I want you to know that there are amazing discoveries being made every day for this devastating disease. Today (8/27/26) we got news that a new pancreatic cancer drug was approved by the FDA which a few of our doctors helped research. I truly wish nothing but the best for you and breast cancer research in general. My maternal grandmother has lived with breast cancer for over a decade (she really is a badass) and she has the BRACA gene. If you do, I suggest having your younger biological fam get mammograms early. My kid sister and I will start in the next year or so. All that being said, your writing has not only guided me through difficult times in my life, but it continues to inspire my own writing. Please take care of yourself above all other obligations and let us know if you need anything 💕 Xoxo Cy.

Sid

It is absolutely not silly at all to be happy that its women dealing with your boobs. Hell im a trans man and I like the fact that my top surgeon is a woman. She definitely understands my priorities a bit better than a male surgeon might.

Elinor Carey

Wishing you the best. I love how you find the positivity during this time (e.g the tummy tuck).

I wish all the luck in the world
