When I first started outlining Practicing Death, this was the very first fort map I threw together. Back then the place was basically four words in my notes: “granary, barracks, dogs, river.”

Then the story did what stories always do. It grew teeth. Distances shifted, new angles appeared, the fort sprawled out, and this neat little square stopped matching what was actually on the page.

I ended up retiring this version and rebuilding the fort in prose instead, but I thought it would be fun to show you the baby sketch that started it all. If you compare it to the chapters, you’ll probably spot a few wrong turns and impossible lines of sight. That fits Seventeen quite well. This is closer to his bad memory of the place than to a tactical plan anyone should trust.

Treat this as a peek into my notebook rather than a canon map.

I also dropped in the world map, the “death routes” dungeon-style map cover and the extra cover, so you can see how the visuals grew around the story over time. None of these are required to follow the chapters; they’re just extra toys if you enjoy seeing how the machinery behind the scenes looks now that we’re closing in on the end of Book 1.

Hope you enjoy the story. 💛
