The best bar in town is one of my favorite episodes and one of the most meta since Always Sunny never won an Emmy. The popular bar they went to earlier is supposed to be like a regular sitcom on network TV with the more saturated lighting and the drinks that go down easy. The comment about black bars never winning any awards is a commentary on how The Wire didn’t win any Emmys during its run despite it being one of the best shows ever. The fact that Chad Coleman, who plays Z in this, was in The Wire for a few seasons, drives home that point. The burlesque show that Frank talks about represents HBO’s other prestige shows and I believe a comment about how the bar down the street winning awards is about Breaking Bad

There's something about just watching somebody go through It's Always Sunny episodes for the first time that never gets old for me. It's like a way to instant bond with people.

This is easily their best meta episode, and the inside joke references (for those who caught it) were incredible. They had gotten pretty much zero recognition/awards in real life, and they were taking major shots at what other shows do. The ringing of the bell to let everyone know when to drink at the other bar (Sudz) was the equivalent of sitcoms using laugh tracks to let the audience know when they're supposed to laugh. Them stating that shows insert people of other races just to make sure they cover their bases but not too many because black shows just don't win awards! The creating of the "will they or won't they" scenario amongst characters at Sudz followed by Mac excitedly saying that he's coming back next week to see what happens. The reference to the bar down the street winning awards was in reference to the show "Louie" which was on their same network (FX) and was getting huge critical acclaim in the first couple seasons. The gang recognizing that they do a lot of stuff people might like, and then at the very end Charlie telling the critics to go fuck themselves......it was all just pure gold.

And to this day. The show still has not won any major awards. "The Gang Tries Desperately to Win an Award" is one of the highest rated episodes of Always Sunny. Possibly, one of the best "meta episodes" ever made.

The burlesque bar is the Game of Thrones and Louie winning Emmys the prior year (their first years). The excuses of the use of racial slurs, nudity, fecal matter are just excuses the industry uses against IASIP. Because those two shows are vulgar but still racked up emmys. ISIAP was part of the sitcom tribute at last year emmys though no nominations. The cast did receive an ovation.
