Season 4 is finally here! The Wire has been sitting at the throne for some of my favorite experiences in television and I can't wait to dive deeper into its story and characters. A difficult landscape with puddles having the depths of oceans.

Loving your Wire reactions. Shame there is only 1 season left, but glad you are loving it as much as the rest of us did when we watched. Glad you enjoyed your trip!

I'm glad you appreciated the storytelling of Chris' background. If that's not showing without telling, then what is? And now that we know clearly why Michael wanted his step-dad dead it makes his past behavior so much more understandable and tragic. Him not wanting to go see the boxing match with Cutty and until he knows Justin is gonna be there too and he won't be alone with a grown man. Not letting Cutty drive him home alone in the car after the match. Shrinking away from Cutty when he puts a hand on Michael's shoulder in the gym. Him being reluctant to accept help from men like Prez or the school counselor. And of course the "too motherfucking friendly" talk that he has with his friends. It's such a damn shame that his trauma poisoned his thought processes so much that he can't see positive male role models and offers of help as anything else than predatory behavior. Even more so because it led him down a path of seeking out Marlo and his crew as a last resort, when he of all people was strong and independent enough to reject Marlo's money and recruitment efforts before.

Only three more eps left. I recommend you knock them all out at once. I love season 4, but the slow burn ignites for these last 3 episodes. I would be interested to hear your thoughts about these last 3 cut as their own movie, I bet it could make a killer movie for those who never watched the whole thing.

I agree, that scene with the kids in the restaurant is super interesting, to me it feels like a callback to that scene in season 1 with D’Angelo and his girlfriend in the restaurant and him asking her if they belong there, but it greatly expands upon that.

One important detail I'm not sure you noticed. Herc screwed up by accidentally letting Little Kevin know that Randy had talked about the murder of Lex. That's why the other kids are calling Randy a snitch now.

FINALLY!!! Been waiting for you to see that moment with Chris. One of the all time most profound moments I've ever seen in TV before. When people say The Wire might be the best show of all time, it's because of moments like that. One thing I'm not sure if you caught is that Herc basically stupidly implied or told Little Kevin that our man Randy talked about Lex's murder. And Marlo said to not do anything to him, but put the word out that he's a snitch, that's why his class mates aren't messing with him besides his core friends.

Yours truly, Johnny Dollar

That song you liked in Herc's car was Massive Attack's Be Thankful for What You Got. Given that all of the music in The Wire is diegetic, this makes it the least realistic scene in all of the whole show, because I refuse to believe Herc could possibly have that good of taste.

Yeah I definitely appreciate and agree with what you said in the intro, it is hard to find conversations about what the Wire conveys to it's audience. About politics and classism etc. That's exactly why this show is the GOAT. It's talking about real world problems using fictional characters. So rare tv shows that can do that. Also can't wait for the season finale!

It makes me sad that so many actors from this show have passed away.: Robert F. Chew, Robert Hogan, Melvin Williams, Reg E. Cathey, Michael K. Williams, and Lance Reddick 😥

At around 11 minutes into episode 9, Carcetti and company are looking at a map of Baltimore and thinking of what and where to build something new with Carcetti's name on it. And the developer guy says "Further south you have the Locust Point Marine Terminal, which unfortunately is still a working enterprise" That line has stayed with me since the first time I heard it, and it pisses me off so much. As they then begin to discuss building stadiums, expo centers, casinos. But not the one thing a city needs which is working enterprises for blue collar people to work at! Sobotka saw the writing on the wall, "See that Nicky? You know what that is? Condominiums"

It's interesting how we learn so much about Chris just from show don't tell style stuff. He wears military style leather boots and often woodland camo, takes the kids working under him to woods for shooting practice, follows orders without question, has a very calm demeanor and he only loses his cool the moment that he learns what happened to Mike. So I'm guessing the implications here are that Chris grew up being abused, perhaps took care of his abuser and was sent to military school or military itself. He came back and became an enforcer for Marlo, who he is super loyal to for reasons unknown. Either way, Chris has the upper hand in the drug game by being both intelligent and competent (compared to how we saw most guys in season 2 just shoot with their eyes closed, hoping to hit something). Slim is kinda the same way (minus the military part) for prop Joe. Very interesting how every boss needs one super competent sidekick to bounce ideas off of (unless they turn out like Stringer). But yeah, Snoop, Chris and Marlo form one of the fiercest teams we have seen on the show.

Omg totally called that with Michael’s dad. I completely forgot that revelation but with him recoiling when Cutty touched his shoulder, how he got real sketchy when he was alone in the car, and how he commented on the boxer’s body but then immediately got weird and made a comment about he must get lots of girls…I’m a few episodes behind on the full watch through but I think that’s all episode 4 or 6. I know I didn’t catch this back in ‘05 but a full decade of being a therapist, blatant sign of SA. Such a wonderful acting job at showing those little subtle flinches and mood switch ups

I saw your reaction to the pilot episode on youtube and immediately thought “I can’t believe he’s never seen the wire. this is going to be his favorite show of all time once he’s done with it” 10 episodes into the 4th season and I think I’m already right
