The Sopranos season one has been a blast! I'm already hyped for the next season and again, genuinely impressed by the human nature and character study that is happening within this series.

Night King01

As much as I loved Richie as a foil for Tony, realistically there was no way he could stick around. He was just too much of a wild card. David Proval not getting nominated for anything for his performance as Richie boggles my mind.

"What, are you gonna cry now?" Well, yeah, but she's got something else to do first.

Night King01

Richies reaction when he sees Janice with the gun is morbidly funny because he thinks she’s being overdramatic and then when he gets shot his face just switches to complete shock.

Night King01

To think that tony still eats out of satriales makes me sick after watching this.

BTW, the young man that was hanging around with Richie wasn't his son, but his nephew, Jackie Junior, whose father was the boss who died of cancer in the first season. That's who Richie was referring to when he said, "Why can't I have a son like that?"

That is my favorite Livia Soprano moment in the whole show. Convinces Tony she is actually senile, then breaks character laughing when she sees how upset she made him.

Marshal McLuhan was a Canadian philosopher who specialized in media theory and is considered the father of media studies. If you've heard the phrase "the media is the message" he's the guy the coined it. The writers were being pretty cheeky with that reference. Even the other characters in the scene had no idea what the nurse was talking about. One thing people talk about a lot less is how funny this show can be with its irony. When Ritchie meets Chris for the first time he threatens him about hitting Adrianna and says you should put a ring on a woman's finger if you're going to lay hands on her. He hadn't married Janice yet and that line really came back on him with a vengeance. Then you have Livia laughing at her gangster son as he trips, falls and drops a gun and has to scramble for it. This show is too much.

Episode 12 is obviously shocking, but I think these two episodes are also great examples of how funny this show can be, from Junior’s hand getting stuck in the drain to Carmela getting pissed at Tony over his mistress, etc.

Richies death is one of my favorite character deaths of all time. when janice returns with the gun *chefs kiss* Great scene. The way it was edited was well done. The funny thing is that Janice was partly to blame for why Richie was about to be whacked anyway. She constantly goaded him into hating Tony, making him feel undermined, pushing him to try to take power ("it should be you", "he doesn't want you around his children".).

I never got around to watching Mean Streets, one of Scorsese's early movies, but I thought I'd bring it up here because it features David Proval's (who played Richie) screen debut. If you reacted to it, it might give me a reason to finally watch it.

As great as these episodes were, I can't wait for you to see the finale. One of the best in the whole show.

Kana Kawase

Your reaction to the shot of Janice with the gun provides a good lesson in film making. When the shot first appears, we can see that you look at Janice's face, but then the movement of her hands draws your gaze downward and you spot the gun. Composition. Directing the audience's attention. We can see it in action.

Are we taking a break this week? I forget if you said that or not James.
