Hoo boy... S**t's getting real.

You’re absolutely right, and one of the first people I’ve seen read Kennedy and Heidi in the correct way. The man takes a psychedelic, and instead of being ripped apart by his actions, he feels even more validated. He feels like the universe can’t touch him, and that all his actions are validated by God for lack of better term. And yet we just saw the most grim, awful thing that’s happened on the show. “That’s the guy Adriana, my uncle Tony, the guy I’m going to Hell for..” - Christopher Moltisanti. The next episodes are so incredibly amazing, and I can’t wait to hear your take on them. Great watching with you as always James. Thank you!

You should really put Sharp Objects on the poll! Absolutely genius southern gothic murder mystery and it's a miniseries too so it's a quick watch

So psyched to see you react to these episodes!!!!!

Also, remember how much Tony loved the ducks, and now he’s dumping asbestos in their habitation: what a dick. This show portrays pure sociopathy in a way I’ve never seen it before. After Breaking Bad/BCS I never thought I’d see one more evil than Walter White. But the Sopranos had it lapped a couple years before. Wild.

“Kennedy and Heidi” is a devastating masterpiece of an episode, one of the best of the show. Even though Tony and Christopher are both scumbags, it was horrifying to see what Tony did to him, and his lack of remorse afterwards. Also, that scene of AJ’s sociopathic friends beating up that kid is incredibly hard to watch, I hate everyone in this show.

Your journey towards the dark side is almost complete.

obviously gandolfini has shown himself to be an excellent actor already but that monologue with melfi about him passing on his genes to AJ is just a masterclass. Anger, sadness, fear, hopelesness, everything in a 5 minute scene. just peak

I see that scene with chris and jt two ways. One, chris finally stops lying to himself and resigns himself to the violent life he’s in, or two, chris being a vengeful hypocrite like tony cant handle when the truth is presented to him so he lashes out in anger

There's a key bit of dialogue between Melfi and Tony, in their real session. When she asks him how he's doing with all this. His answer is something to the effect of "there are people around me who are feeling real grief, but I have to pretend to feel sorry with them, and that makes me resent them". That's the admission of a sociopath. He doesn't feel feelings in a normal way, the empathy that should be there just isn't. He admits this to her without realizing what he's admitting. Tony is admitting that he wears a mask. Remember the college episode back in season 1? The sign at the college with the quote about a man with two faces. That was the first time we saw Tony murder. And here he's murdered again, and this idea that he wears a mask for the people around him because his true self is so cold, so evil and sociopathic that he can't really reveal it. His murder of Christopher was as cold as it gets, no feelings. He went dead with shark eyes. The show is trying really hard to reinforce to us the audience that he's a cold blooded murderer, at his core, that's what he is. Any feelings are a facade, momentary glimpses of humanity that he might've had at one point that are getting systematically squashed out.

Night King01

Tony saw Christopher as a hindrance to his success so given the opportunity with no one else around he killed him. Tony is all about self preservation. Remember he almost killed Christopher in season 5 but Tony B was there to stop him.

Owen Young

James, would you read the poem The Second Coming by Yeats before the next episode like you did for Ozymandias?

Artem Sheverenov

The asbestos scenes are actually crucial to the series as a whole. All the introspection with therapy scenes, wholesome family dinners, hilarious jokes - these are the things that balanced the show from getting too dark. But the ugliness was always there. It always was a show about terrible people, and now it's apparent that even the vague "garbage disposal business" title that Tony used to describe his occupation in the very first episode of the show has revealed itself as horrific crime, one that would eventually kill more people than were ever shown on the screen. And I don't think Tony was dealing with a guilty conscience. He was dealing with the fact that he is indeed a monster. The final scene of the episode is the moment he finally accepted that.

Man I love this show! The Season 1 quote from “College” really comes full circle here: “No man can, for any considerable period, wear one face to himself, and another to the multitude…” Tony’s referred to himself a couple of times as the “sad clown” but it isn’t about hidden sorrow, it’s about a performed empathy he can’t sustain when it costs him something. His emotional life is real, but self-referential. He can register others’ feelings, but he can’t prioritize them over his own desire, ego, or power. That’s what makes him more unsettling than a cold sociopath: he knows what he’s doing emotionally… and still chooses himself anyway. Christopher’s death exposes it. He kills him for “weakness,” then goes to Vegas, does his drugs, sleeps with his girlfriend, and calls it enlightenment. Pure hypocrisy and total self-mythologizing. He acts like he’s exhausted by being evil but he’s really exhausted by performing humanity! So much so that he can’t even perform it well enough to avoid becoming Livia, dismissing his own son with an “oh, poor you.” He’s a monster and an amazing character! Love this show 💕
