One odd follow up: would guided (i.e XM395) mortars change his thoughts on 120mm mortars being a "poor mans 105"? I imagine the answer is still "no, it's a much smaller warhead with 40% the range", but what if an rocket motor extended the mortar's range to 10-12km (vs 17 - 19km for a 105)? From another angle a fuel air munition has much higher energy density vs conventional high explosives by virtue of using "locally sourced oxidzer". A fuel air munition mortar warhead could approximate the energy release of a 105 HE shell, albeit with the limitations of thermobaric weapons. In a world where 155mm guns are common, I could see a pathway to the 105 being an unnecessary middle ground between man portable and heavy artillery.
