Finally the answer to the question from Andrew:

"My question is as follows: Did the major powers in the European theater (US, UK, USSR, Germany) have standard operating procedures for recycling those piles of artillery shells we see in pictures from so many wars from WWI onward? Or was the metal just buried, or recycled or not recycled as a local commander saw fit?"

Was there Artillery Shell Recycling in WW2?

There is another Colonel Question, this time from Andrew: "My question is as follows: Did the major powers in the European theater (US, UK, USSR, Germany) have standard operating procedures for recycling those piles of artillery shells we see in pictures from so many wars from WWI onward? Or was the metal just buried, or recycled or not recycled as a local commander saw fit?" »» SUPPORT MHV «« » patreon - https://www.patreon.com/mhv » paypal donation - https://www.paypal.com/cgi-bin/webscr?cmd=_s-xclick&hosted_button_id=TFHEY4P4YU3NY »» MERCHANDISE - SPOILS OF WAR «« » shop - https://www.redbubble.com/people/mhvis/shop »» SOCIAL MEDIA «« » minds.com - https://www.minds.com/militaryhistoryvisualized » facebook - https://www.facebook.com/milhistoryvisualized/ » twitter - https://twitter.com/MilHiVisualized » twitch - https://www.twitch.tv/militaryhistoryvisualized » RallyPoint - https://www.rallypoint.com/organizations/military-history-visualized » tumblr - http://militaryhistoryvisualized.tumblr.com/ Military History Visualized provides a series of short narrative and visual presentations like documentaries based on academic literature or sometimes primary sources. Bremen

There is an early Die Deutsche Wochenschau (English: The German Weekly Review) film from the very beginning of the conflict, 1 Sept. 1939 to be exact, showing the old pre-dreadnought Schleswig-Holstein firing the opening shots of WWII during her somewhat infamous point blank bombardment of the small Polish military depot on the Westerplatte peninsula at Danzig. About 2 minutes into the film the camera cuts to a group of German sailors shoving spent 28cm shell casings into a barge tied alongside the battleship, one assumes, for recycling.
