Was the Afrika Korps worth it?

Was it worth it to send the Afrika Korps at all? In this video we look at the Mediterranean Campaign in World War 2, which is usually overshadowed by the "Desert Warfare" between Rommel and Montgomery. »» SUPPORT MHV «« » patreon - https://www.patreon.com/mhv » paypal donation - https://www.paypal.com/cgi-bin/webscr?cmd=_s-xclick&hosted_button_id=TFHEY4P4YU3NY » Book Wishlist https://www.amazon.de/gp/registry/wishlist/3LJIXNJIUXJES/ref=cm_wl_huc_view »» MERCHANDISE - SPOILS OF WAR «« » shop - https://www.redbubble.com/people/mhvis/shop »» SOCIAL MEDIA «« » minds.com - https://www.minds.com/militaryhistoryvisualized » facebook - https://www.facebook.com/milhistoryvisualized/ » twitter - https://twitter.com/MilHiVisualized » twitch - https://www.twitch.tv/militaryhistoryvisualized » RallyPoint - https://www.rallypoint.com/organizations/military-history-visualized » tumblr - http://militaryhistoryvisualized.tumblr.com/ Military History Vlogs is a support channel to Military History Visualized with a focus personal accounts, answering questions that arose on the main channel and showcasing events like visiting museums, using equipment or military hardware. » SOURCES « Ball, Simon: The Mediterranean and North Africa, 1940-1944, in: Cambridge History of the Second World War – Volume I, p. 358-388 Amazon.com (affiliate): http://amzn.to/2zX5ZMB Amazon.de (affiliate): http://amzn.to/2z5j1bF Preston, Paul: Spain: betting on a Nazi victory; in: Cambridge History of the Second World War: Volume II: Politics & Ideology, p. 324-349 Amazon.com (affiliate): http://amzn.to/2zX5ZMB Amazon.de (affiliate): http://amzn.to/2z5j1bF Das Deutsche Reich und der Zweite Weltkrieg, Band 3: Der Mittelmeerraum und Südosteuropa 1940-1941 (English Version below) Amazon.de (affiliate): https://amzn.to/2DZoPnz ENGLISH VERSION: Germany and the Second World War, Volume 3, The Mediterranean, South-east Europe, and North Africa, 1939-1941 Amazon.com link (affiliate): https://amzn.to/2I8eJ6C Das Deutsche Reich und der Zweite Weltkrieg – Band 6 – Der Globale Krieg Amazon.de link (affiliate): http://amzn.to/2igUEAm ENGLISH VERSION: Germany and the Second World War – Volume 6 – The Global War Amazon.com (affiliate): http://amzn.to/2iSsxut Das Deutsche Reich und der Zweite Weltkrieg – Band 8 Amazon.de (affiliate): http://amzn.to/2z6bN7j ENGLISH VERSION: Germany and the Second World War – Volume 8 – The Eastern Front 1943-1944: The War in the East and on the Neighbouring Fronts Amazon.com (affiliate): https://amzn.to/2H5sRhB » DISCLAIMER « Amazon Associates Program: “Bernhard Kast is a participant in the Amazon Services LLC Associates Program, an affiliate advertising program designed to provide a means for sites to earn advertising fees by advertising and linking to amazon.com.” » CREDITS & SPECIAL THX « Song: Ethan Meixsell - Demilitarized Zone

The loss of Tobruk in June 1942 was quite a shock to Churchill who was visiting the American president. There's even a New York Times article from this period available on the Web: " BRITISH IRE IS HIGH OVER TOBRUK LOSS; Churchill Will Be Under Fire on Return, With the Anger Over Libya Mounting PRESS LEADS QUESTIONING German Move on Syria Now Regarded as a Possibility." At the time it really looked like Alexandria and Cairo would be next. With hindsight, military historians assure us that the German would not have been able to maintain this advance. That was not the feeling at the time, though. And as for the question - was the Afrika Korps worth it? - I think the answer is an overwhelming yes. An astonishing bold campaign that continually harrassed and humiliated the British and led to a series of significant dismissals by Churchill of his leading commanders in that theatre.

well, before Tobruk fell, there was already a back and forth, remember the first time Tobruk held and was relieved during the British counter-offensive. North Africa always was back and forth. Rommel may have harassed the British, but the amount of Axis equipment, ships and supplies that got sunk were a very high price to pay. Even if Egypt would have fallen, the strategic advantage was gone at this point. In 1940, this might be very different, but in 1942 with the US already in the war, it would just have been a delay.
