Tuesday: Panzers in Spain (Vlog)

Friday: Wehrmacht & 1943 (Vlog)

Saturday: Maybe there will be an extra Podcast, since there were a few voices that noted that my statement that the Bismarck was one of the most advanced warships on at its commission (1940) was wrong. I had a little chat with Justin about this and well, it was quite fun ;)
But I will head to Germany this week, so not sure if I am fast enough editing the Podcast in time.

New Podcast Policy, I intend to release the Video Version of each podcast 8 days after the release of the Podcast. Thus, on Sunday every 2nd week.

Warship design is so complex that there is never going to be a consensus on what "advanced" actually means. Bismarck had very "advanced" armour applied in a very orthodox German ww1 style way. Bismarck had very "advanced" radar range finding but quite backward radar in all other ways. You could go through most things on her in this way, and the same applies to most battleships and indeed warships in general. Cutting edge state of the art in all fields happens very rarely in warships which take so long to design and build that they have almost always been surpassed in some way by the time they are actually deployed. Bismarck is clearly on the wrong side of the generation gap between ww2 fast battleships and ww1 super-dreadnaughts though, even though she was actually faster than some of those faster battleships. Realistically when Bismarck fought Hood it was really the most powerful ww1 style battleship fighting the most powerful ww1 style battlecruiser.

yeah, yet those accusations were on a bit of a different level. You and I know that most terms are relative and need to be taken in context, thus I state "at its commission", which is a rather tight time-frame for a very limited amount of vessels, which are usually only completed every few years. What Justin and I discuss is that the Bismarck was intentionally designed along that armor scheme, it was not that the Kriegsmarine was unaware of it. And yeah, about the Hood, I completely agree. One German book has the data of both next to each other and the author notes that the comparison can be stopped at the commission date.
