Why not blockade Japan into Surrender? (feat. D.M. Giangreco)

Quite regularly people ask on my Pacific war videos, why the US didn't blockade the Japanese islands. Since it was rather apparent that the invasion plans Olympic and Downfall would be very costly in terms of casualities and the Japanese Navy and Air Forces were basically non-operational for the most part anyway. Well, this question was also handled by the US Forces during the war and US Navy and US Army had different approaches. This video features parts of an interview with D.M. Giangreco the author of Hell to Pay. Operation Downfall and the Invasion of Japan. »» SUPPORT MHV «« » patreon - https://www.patreon.com/mhv » paypal donation - https://www.paypal.com/cgi-bin/webscr?cmd=_s-xclick&hosted_button_id=TFHEY4P4YU3NY » Book Wishlist https://www.amazon.de/gp/registry/wishlist/3LJIXNJIUXJES/ref=cm_wl_huc_view »» MERCHANDISE - SPOILS OF WAR «« » shop - https://www.redbubble.com/people/mhvis/shop »» SOCIAL MEDIA «« » twitter - https://twitter.com/MilHiVisualized » facebook - https://www.facebook.com/milhistoryvisualized/ » twitch - https://www.twitch.tv/militaryhistoryvisualized » tumblr - http://militaryhistoryvisualized.tumblr.com/ » minds.com - https://www.minds.com/militaryhistoryvisualized Military History Visualized provides a series of short narrative and visual presentations like documentaries based on academic literature or sometimes primary sources. The Soviets were busy mopping up in Manchuria around that time, would this have been a factor in the decision making?

Military History Visualized

well, there are 2 follow-up videos that indirectly answer this question. The short answer is: without the US Manchuria would not have happened in this way for several reasons.

Well, its title is rather misleading and it seems rather rushed. It doesn't actually say why a blockade wouldn't have worked. It says the Navy wanted to do it, the Army didn't and the political necessity to finish the war decided which would happen. It is also structurally a bit weird, with the conclusion talking about rationing and stuff which had not been mentioned in the (admittedly only 3 minute) main body. If it was a an school essay you would get "see me after class" in the comments, but its not an undergraduate essay its a 5 minute youtube video.
