German Defensive Tactics - Eastern Front

Time to take a look at how the Wehrmacht setup defensive positions, at first, we take a look at the a position of a company in defense from a manual published in 1940. In the second part, we take a look at an example from January 1942, when the Germans were defending themselves with heavily depleted units on the Ostfront (Eastern Front) against the Soviet attacks. »» SUPPORT MHV «« » patreon - https://www.patreon.com/mhv » paypal donation - https://www.paypal.com/cgi-bin/webscr?cmd=_s-xclick&hosted_button_id=TFHEY4P4YU3NY » Book Wishlist https://www.amazon.de/gp/registry/wishlist/3LJIXNJIUXJES/ref=cm_wl_huc_view »» MERCHANDISE - SPOILS OF WAR «« » shop - https://www.redbubble.com/people/mhvis/shop »» SOCIAL MEDIA «« » twitter - https://twitter.com/MilHiVisualized » facebook - https://www.facebook.com/milhistoryvisualized/ » twitch - https://www.twitch.tv/militaryhistoryvisualized » tumblr - http://militaryhistoryvisualized.tumblr.com/ » minds.com - https://www.minds.com/militaryhistoryvisualized Military History Visualized provides a series of short narrative and visual presentations like documentaries based on academic literature or sometimes primary sources. You asked for opinions on why they chose those gun locations... Former Cavalry Scout... I think because the 88mm flak is a larger, longer range, static gun. They put it looking down a road they could probably see quite a ways. Also, they'd be dealing with frontal armor. WIth the 7xmm anti-tank gun, they put looking at another likely avenue of approach, but would only be dealing with thinner, less sloped side armor. Also, possibly closer range, and maybe the gun itself is easier to traverse horizontally than the flak gun. Also, not exactly going to set up a flak gun easily on less flat terrain in a woodline. As for the tripod mounted machine guns... no idea why they'd be doubled, other than for one to pick up the fight while the other reloads, probably from commanding static positions.

Also, the anti-tank gun was likely hidden, and looking directly down through town, in case (once again) Russian armor got into the town. That position lets them command the town and the northwestern approach. A very good position.
