#21 - Erwin Rommel vs. Desert Fox | Military History Verbalized

Discussing the Rommel in the World Wars and the Myth

Comments

Richard Stokes

Rommel at critical times was absent from the battlefield. The obvious example is at the beginning of the main battle of El Alamein where he was away in Germany. But I think there are other examples - at the start of Crusader and, of course, the D-Day surprise. Could this repeated misreading of the timing of enemy offensives be seen as a major flaw in his leadership ? Or were the Allies just too clever in their concealment preparations?

well, I know for D-Day that a lot of German commanders were absent. Still the chain of command usually should have little problem, with D-Day this was of course a bit different due to the size etc.
