Listening to vets on utube always brings a new perspective. Especially the subjective view of the soldier. Even if his memory of dates and people is fragmented, his feelings about those around him, his fear or not, and particularly his regard for how he was treated is also an important part of the story.

Brings to memory my enjoyable experience with W-SS vet--and that my search for armor vets was so close, but frustrated. Two I found over years were reluctant to talk. Perhaps I had no cred with them at that time. Later, after several books on vets, US and my W-SS man, I would have more luck. But the clock is ticking.

That was exactly my thought, History tend to give us the point of view- and unfortunately often a biased one cf. Manstein among others- of the men in charge or of somebody that used to frequent them but what about the feeling of the "lambda" soldier, his feelings, his fears, on an enemy he had no choice in choosing, on his superiors, on his comrades and the way they were behaving or even the the conquered population. WW1 was a sort of ramp in this field and this had huge impact on its contemporary population minds.
