"The Germans were just Lucky"

Recently someone noted about the Japanese and then the Germans that they were just lucky about their early successes, well, this for me is just another oversimplification that is just wrong. In this video Justin Pyke (MA) and address this whole issue in a little more detail, with some very specific examples. Definitions of Luck: “Success or failure apparently brought by chance rather than through one's own actions.” “Luck Is What Happens When Preparation Meets Opportunity." You have to be good to be lucky..

Phil Moyer

A friend of mine wrote a book called "The Success Equation" that is subtitled "Untangling Skill and Luck in Business, Sports, and Investing." He has developed a statistical approach to determining the skill:luck ratio in a given endeavour. It would be interesting to see what his algorithms advise on your analysis (I might take time to do the analysis, since this is a very interesting subject.)

that sounds very interesting, the main problem might be that we might not have enough data or that focusing it down to certain aspects work. Sports is highly regulated, so it is rather easy there, even business is quite "limited" compared to a battle let alone campaign or war.
