Your video "Why the German Army failed in the West 43-44" discusses the use of artillery by both sides during the war, but curiously never mentions the introduction of the proximity fuse into Allied artillery shells in late 1944. My question is did the German Army ever realize the American army was using a new type of artillery shell? The American commentators of the time were very enthusiatic. Since artillery shell to the guys on the receiving end is just another big explosion, I could see it taking some time before anybody realises that "there are quite a lot more airbursts recently".

Hi Michael, from what I know the proximity / VT fuse was an AAA shell not regular artillery. Additionally, for security reasons it was not used above "enemy territory", hence mostly against the V-1 in the ETO. Besides that, I didn't came across anything discussing the VT fuze on the axis side. Cheers, Bernhard

Thanks so much — I feel a little guilty putting you through so much time and trouble.

no worries, didn't take long and I learned something new, wasn't aware of the use as artillery shells. Btw. I showed Military Aviation History the word "Raschboom" as well and his reaction was "yes, sounds wrong." I will keep an eye out if I come across Ardennes stuff in the archive etc.
