0617 A good catch. Max Hastings is a career manipulative shill. He’s very eloquent, articulate, very good at cherry picking data to manipulate the readers into reaching a preconceived conclusion unwittingly. I caught him on his book, ‘The Retribution’, but most people, even the veterans who had served in the time period do not have the info that I do. Some British criticize the Americans being crass, materialistic. Well, Max Hastings is more ‘American’ than many Americans. 1620 Did the IJN senior leadership and IJA Toshei faction have the ‘skin in the game’/ The civilians would have done a far better job. At least they would have kept Japan out of the offensive/aggressive war altogether. In the end, especially in a total war, we all have ‘skin in the game’, in fact, the rank and file troops, most of whom are civilians with no career aspirations at all, in the military, especially at high ranks, but who would borne the brunt of casualties. 1653 Gen. Mathis cares about Gen. Mathis, and the Senor USMC leadership to a lesser extent. As for the rank and file USMCs, they’re nothing more than tools for the budget battles with other branches, more heads, more money to play with better and more ‘toys’. USMC had engaged in largely wasteful ‘Island hopping campaign’ in order to sacrifice ‘enough’ bodies so that USMC could claim they had done their part and sacrificed so much so they deserved to exist as an independent branch, instead of being absorbed into U.S. Army. This was colluded along with U.S.N. who needed an ally to compete with U.S. Army, with its nascent U.S.A.F. in the upcoming budget battles after the war had ended. Btw. U.S.N. is not exactly thrilled to have USMC an independent branch, either, but at least it’s smaller than U.S. Army, and more useful to U.S.N. than the Army, and competes less, and needs U.S.N. more to survive than U.S. Army. They are not exactly thrilled with one another, but need each other more, especially USMC against the Army, and U.S.A.F. This relationship was perfectly captured in the movie, ‘A Few Good Men’. Lt. Kaffee and Lt. Kendrick - YouTube U.S. Army loves Navy SEALS, not exactly USMC, who think SEALS are competitors and resent being outclassed in small arms combat by SEALS. 2046 Oh, I agree. I know one American historian, whose parents are British through, and through, who is PEDANTIC to the max, totally skipping the strategic part. 2440 Samuel B. Griffith, Brig. Gen. USMC, Ph.D. in Chinese Military History from Oxford, plus U.S. Naval War College, got the main reason for PLA victory against KMT totally wrong.

‘’I had never heard of the rivalries in the early ROK army; one would think that after what they had just gone through, everyone would be united.’’ Actually, it’s typical in the militaries. The heroes of the Haitian revolution, were murdered by their own men. The same with Cubans, many heroes of the independence were murdered by their own men, and here, I am not even talking about Castro. President Park himself had purged the military, and later was murdered during the rival cliques fighting, and then later cliques went on fighting again. During 70s, many young Korean males preferred to serve as KATUSA than in ROK army. Better food, lodging, and treatment, considered U.S. Army in SK in 70s, to be more professional than ROK army. For many of them, the real enemy was not NK, but was sleeping in the corner of the barrack. One didn’t want to be assigned to the same unit where one would be the only one from a rival province. ROK army has had more active shooting than any modern militaries. I remember in 80s, two paratroopers got jumped by 17 combat policemen, and almost beaten to death, and the intervening civilians got beat real bad as well. Paras and the combat policemen were supposed to have been on the same side against the student activists. Have you ever read or seen this one/ The Human Condition (film series) - Wikipedia During Battan death march, many .G.I.s simply refuse to help one another based on the first hand account of G.I.s, who also reported that Koreans serving in the IJA were worse than the Japanese. The only ones who were trying to help were Filipinos, strange, not so long ago, U.S. military had been waging war against them, and in one case, a company of U.S. army were almost massacred by the Filipino villagers. Battle of Balangiga - Wikipedia During the Japanese captivity, not only many Allied units fought among themselves, occasionally even allied together, against British, who thought they were better than other Allied soldiers, and Aussies, NZ got along better with the Americans than the British. The Americans, on the other hand, were the only Allied soldiers who had their own intra nation cliques/rivalry, divided into West coast, East Coast, South, Texas, and the rest, plus it was racially segregated as well, W, B, and H. Texas was the only integrated clique, provided they were from Texas. The reasons why I am not big on unit coherence are two fold. 1. It doesn’t do much to discourage clique thing, it only masks it. 2. It tends to lead groupthink, which can be disastrous, especially in rapidly changing conditions. Groupthink - Wikipedia IJA, during the island hopping campaigns, refused to help different units. ‘’But then, I look at what's going on in America...’’ What’s happening right now reminds me of Gracchus brothers, and the Marian reform, and not in a good way.
