Why the "Hetzer"? Why not Stugs?

Why build the "Hetzer" (Jagdpanzer 38 (t)) in the first place? Why don't continue the productions of Stugs - Sturmgeschütze regular assault guns? For this we talk to the director of the Panzermuseum Munster Ralf Raths. Disclaimer: I was invited by the Panzermuseum Munster in 2020. Another way of looking at it is that when von Manstein first considered the StuG the purpose was to assist advancing infantry. By 1943 those days were mostly over so what was needed was an armored tank destroyer to protect infantry in defensive positions.

yeah, the main issue with anti-tank defense was (almost) always mobility, e.g., all German anti-tank guns were (or should have been) basically motorized no matter if they were part of an infantry or tank division, this was simply due to the fact that to defend against a tank attack, you need to be able to be fast. This is something I was not really aware back then, it came up during the research on the German officer arguing against Panzer Divisions.

I ´m curious if the design was work of Böhmische-Mährische Maschinenfabrik (like devoted Czechaboo). InCczech-speaking literature is usually written that it is - but what do you know about it? Did you encounter this information in your research?

I did not look into this at all so far, basically back in 2020 I did 1-2 weeks of research and writing, while checking with Ralf what interviews we could do and for those I usually did no extra research. I know that tankarchives noted that the designer was a Czech or at least not a German and that he claimed that he introduced some weak points / flaws in the design and the Germans did not notice, YET, I am generally rather hesitant about such statements, since it likely came from a memoir or interview and various design flaws were/are common even with people that don't try to sabotage anything.
