Waffen-SS: Elite or Mass-Army?

Waffen-SS divisions are often portrayed as an elite formations, yet, this view misses that the Waffen-SS had a large amount of divisions with very different combat records. This video takes a closer look at the Waffen-SS based on academic sources and will also explain why many statements of the Waffen-SS divisions are just wrong, since they don't account for the heterogeneity of the various divisions. »» GET OUR BOOK «« » Army Regulation Medium Panzer Company 1941 - http://www.hdv470-7.com »» SUPPORT MHV «« » patreon - see videos early (adfree) - https://www.patreon.com/join/mhv » subscribe star - https://www.subscribestar.com/mhv » paypal donation - https://paypal.me/mhvis » YouTube Membership - https://www.youtube.com/channel/UCK09g6gYGMvU-0x1VCF1hgA/join »» MERCHANDISE «« » teespring - https://teespring.com/stores/military-history-visualized » SOURCES « Wegner, Bernd: Hitlers politische Soldaten: die Waffen-SS 1933 - 1945: Leitbild, Struktur und Funktion einer nationalsozialistischen Elite. 9. I thought that in 33 there was a rivalry between the Reichswehr and the SA

? does that exclude a rivalry between the SS and Reichswehr? The Reichswehr wanted to keep the monopoly for armed forces, so they would have had a rivalry with the Eastern Bunny if he had tried to create an armed force within Germany.

In a sense yes. I would say that back then the rivalry between SS aber Reichswehr wasn't yet on the table. The SA had declared that it wanted to become to armed forces of fhe German Reich and in fact saw itself opposed to the traditional forces that constituted the Reichswehr. The SS wasn't yet a big political factor. It wasn't after the night of the long knives that the SS started to become important in the sense of a mass-organisation.

you wrote 1933, but in my script it is "The creation of the Verfügungstruppe in 1934 was to certain degree strongly influence by the rivalry between the German Army and the SS." Night of long knives was in 1934. Not sure maybe I said 1933, but it is also noted "Creation in 1934".
