IS-2: When 85mm are not enough

The Soviet heavy tank IS-2 is barely covered in English or German literature so we looked a bit into Russian sources as well, for this Jens Wehner from the Militärhistorische Museum (MHM) der Bundeswehr Dresden and Peter from Tank Archives helped out. Additionally, we also have some nice footage of the IS-2 Model 1944 from the MHM Dresden from 2019. Indeed interesting. My understanding is that the Soviets liked the Christie layout as allowed for a better effective armour. The trade off being of course the assistant driver gone, which at the time was appreciated by other armies for many good reasons. The narrow Hull has the disadvantage of putting more stress on the transmission at turning and of course a limit on turret ring (which they managed to overcome, probably the lack of second loader) The he is of course an advantage, and not a little one, though I am unsure how practical is to shoot one of those old things at long range, even in the Eastern front. I also wonder about the torque output and type of transmission, as to whether the narrowness would diminish the engine overproportionally to say the tiger II. I guess it would be too easy to derive it just for the speed you mentioned, as it would appear that at a similar torque output, there is more reduction in the higher gears, even if lighter...

Fascinating video, and very informative! I had heard of the IS- series, and the Josef Stalin tank, but did not know they were the same thing. The Russians must be given credit with coming up with a new design that would be effective against the Tiger and Panther tanks, and moving it to production in less than a year. And that gun...!!!

thank you, I haven't looked into the Christie stuff yet, from what I know a lot of myths etc. surround that topic, so I likely stay away from it until I have time to take a "deep dive".
