Sturmpioniere at Stalingrad - German Assault Engineers

In this video Jens Wehner from the MHM Dresden and I talk Sturmpioniere (Assault Engineers / Assault Pioneers) in the Wehrmacht during World War II. We also look at the origins, how accurate the portrayal in the movie Stalingrad (1993) is and of course operation Hubertus (Unternehmen Hubertus). Some trivia: The mentioned speech of Hitler appears in the film after the assault on the factory building, when they are in a house during a combat break. In that speech Hitler also mentions "the" reason for attacking Stalingrad: to prevent food from being shipped upstream at the Wolga to Moscow. Which is a nice link to your video on war economy and that food is maybe the most underrated raw material. - The combat scene of the attack on the factory was shot at the identical location where more than a decade later the video-clip to Rammstein's song Amerkia was shot. - A small correction I can actually only make thank to your work: If I remember correctly there had been also plans to make an offensive at Leningrad, but due to the offensive of the Red Army at Rhzev it had to be cancelled. Be it as it may: Rhzev is also an indicator for what you were saying: the Wehrmacht was only able to go into the offensive in the south, in the middle they werde in the defense and in the north an offensive was cancelled and instead they only held up the blockade.

thank you, yeah, he does some numbers as well, watched it recently; there will be a bit more in the upcoming weeks on Stalingrad and the different directives. Yeah, Leningrad was planned, but I think it was not only Rhzev but also an attack by the Red Army near Leningrad as well, but I could be terribly wrong. I think in directive 41 the plan one step at a time is laid out with all the different objectives.
