Why Communists built a NATO caliber Assault Rifle?

Why did East Germany (German Democratic Republic) produce an Assault Rifle in NATO caliber? This question will be answered by Dr. Jens Wehner of the Military History Museum of the Bundeswehr in Dresden. We take a look at the Wieger 940 series, particularly the Wieger 941, 942 and 943. Why these guns were built, to whom they were marketed and some more context. Usually I like to wait until the regular release date to watch something, but in this case I felt I needed to see this now. I vaguely recall being aware of the 943 but I had no idea the Stasi was behind the whole project for commercial purposes. I definitely didn't know about the huge Indian contract. Also, great interview, always great to hear from Jens.

I remember when these came out, and did a quick search. Back in the early 1990's Inter Ordnance made a clone of this, and sold them for around 400.00. There are still stock kits available, and some original magazines. Could not find a current monetary value for one, but being a rare AK variant, it would probably be worth in the $5000 to $10,000 USD range.
