Back when all the home guard weapons were flooding the US I bought a KAR 98 Russian capture. Surplus corrosive ammo was cheap and available. I bought a bunch and a small amount that had a Nazi waffenamt stamp on the cartridge base. Surprisingly, back in 1938 the Germans had steel penetrators in their rifle cartridges. I don't think the US had this util the 60s.

I hit the wrong button. The main point was that with a steel penetrator that body armor should have been useless at a much longer distance than the Russian rifle, unless the Russians also used that technology.

Yeah, the Germans had special Armor piercing rifle ammo, SmK if I remember correctly. From what I remember using such belts in the Panzer I, it was able to destroy a T-26 from the side at close range in Spain. Yet, generally, one does not shoot at infantry with those.
