German WW2 Jokes: No Laughing Matter

German World War 2 jokes translated from German sources so probably most of these are unknown to English audiences. In this video I cover various WW2 jokes both military and political ones, additionally I provide context on the laws that could lead to persecution for telling such jokes, particularly the Heimtückegesetz (Treachery Act) from December 1934 and the law against Wehrkraftzersetzung (Corruption/Underminining of the War Effort) enacted in 1938 and in 1939 extended to civilians. The term “Flüsterwitze” literally “whisper jokes” is also shortly discussed. The Stalin jokes seem somewhat better than the Hitler jokes. For example, three men are locked away in a Gulag. Why are they there? What was their crime? The first one says he was always 5 minutes late for work , so he was accused of bourgeois laziness and given 2 years. The second said he was always 5 minutes early for work, so they sentenced him 5 years for industrial sabotage. The third man confessed he'd always come to work on time. He was arrested for owning a capitalist watch and given ten years!

A few days ago the following story that had been told to me by my grandfather came to mind (my grandfather became 13 years of age during the battle of Stalingrad so he was a boy back then): On a nearby market there was a vendor of fish who, as it was usual back then announced shoutingly what he had to sell. He shouted: "Hering, Hering so fett wie der Göring!" ("Herring, herring as fat a Göring!") The next day (of the market) he wasn't there and in fact he wasn't there for a week. When he came back after a week he shouted: "Hering, Hering so fett wie vor acht Tagen, aber ich darf's nicht mehr sagen." (Herring, herring as fat as eight days ago, but I may not say it anymore.") As far as I remember that didn't bring him more troubles at least my grandfather didn't hear about him getting trouble. - It is a story I actually have to think about quite often
