Missiles vs Tank Guns: Why Guns are better!

Anti-Tank Guided Missiles (ATGM) instead of a regular tank gun? There were some projects like the M551 Sheridan and M60A2 that replaced the regular tank gun. Meanwhile the Soviets went for a regular tank gun that could also fire ATGMs, what are the benefits and drawbacks of missiles? Why didn't they prevail? How do missiles like the TOW, AT-3 Sagger, NLAW, Javelin and others compare to tank guns in capabilities, complexity, range and other factors? The idea of replacing tank guns with missiles just sounds flat out ridiculous, but not surprising. _ The USAF learned the hard way that missiles were not the only way forward when they built the F-4 Phantom during the Viet Nam war, When the aircraft was delivered, pilots asked where the gun was, and were told there was no gun because it was not needed as there would be no more dogfights. Then an F-4 was shot down by either a MIG-17 or -19, using guns designed decades before. Which led to cobbling a gun to the nose of the F-4... _ The USN is shockingly reliant on missiles. _ I served on an M551 Sheridan in the 3rd ACR, US Army, we only fired 1 missile the whole time I was there. When we went to gunnery, we fired the conventional rounds. The 152mm gun was too much for the Sheridan, a forward shot kicked the track up to the 3rd roadwheel, and we were told to avoid firing a flank shot. Firing on the move was out of the question, despite having stabilization. _ I am doubtful that standard projectile guns will be replaced for a long time, maybe even until such time as energy weapons become mainline.

Personally, I was disappointed that the Herman Goering Panzer Parachute Division didn't live up to its name. Robert Citino was disappointed, too. The best we got was the Ren and Stimpy cartoon (Google "Ren and Stimpy Tank Parachutist.")
