Leopards for Ukraine: Scrap or Wunderwaffe?

There is a discussion in Germany about sending Leopard 1s to Ukraine. The question is how good these tanks are and how the Ukrainian forces could deploy them. In this video we look at the capabilities of the Leopard 1 in regards to the T-72, T-80 and T-90 tanks. The chairman of Rheinmetall stated that in a few months 50 could be shipped. There are an additional 100 in storage with the company FFG. Meanwhile the German chancellor is reluctant. The general public opinion is in favor of sending heavy weapons to Ukraine. Uncle Joe (Brian)

Hi everyone. I've read the German POV here, watched endless DW & I completely disagree with a lot of this, so I'll post it as general comment since I'm not seeing any Devil's Advocate. Looking from Australia, with our unique strategic problem, I think that aggressor nations must be very firmly punished, economically & militarily, to stop the obvious invasion ideas. No-one is about to start firing nukes. Send all the damn tanks etc, please! This war is the very reason all these weapons were built in the first place, only now Ukrainians will die using them instead of Germans! Australia[!!!] is building nuclear submarines which we will effectively deploy [and use if necessary] ourselves with the Indians to block China. Germany spends way too much time "talking about second guessing what Vlad might do if x happens" as an excuse for inaction. Spoiler, Vlad is not going to be mates with Germany whatever happens. Until Vlad 'retires', what on earth are you all expecting? You still buy gas. Meanwhile, China is literally preparing for war. China aren't even pretending now. It might get very ugly in Taiwan & the South Pacific if aggression & the [70yo] 'threat' of nukes isn't firmly nailed down. You think Russia is a problem? Try a Pacific/Indian theatre with China vs The Rest. Failing to act most firmly is a weak betrayal of basic, common western liberal values & could itself lead to WW3, except it starts here, because you guys let Russia get away with it. One final important thing. Russia is a smallish economy with huge land borders , finite resources & a sane leader. The future is not going to happen in Europe, that's pretty much your problem, now that you've woken up. The 21st century is really happening in wider India-Asia-Pacific region. Australia, Japan, Korea & especially Taiwan are in the new front line. The Taiwan situation is getting desperate & now the Solomons. I think we really have look a bit further ahead, after Europe, everyone. This is the practice test, not the exam. We'll be getting that & you better have our backs. Cheers from Canberra! Brian
