Pak 43/41: Deadlier than the Flak 88

This video covers the 88mm Pak 43/41 (trail mount) and Pak 43 (cross mount). This gun weighs almost 4.5 metric tons and served with the German Army during WW2. Although it had a high accuracy and penetration, the height and weight were particularly troublesome. In this video, we look at the gun and particularly at 4 experience reports, 2 from summer 1943 and 2 from February 1944, which gives a better understanding about the capabilities and limits of this gun. I must disagree somewhat about the heavy tank armor resistance: by book, a RHA equivalent of 230mm should be enough to hold a round, penetrating 165mm of RHA at 30 degrees (which calculates to apr. 205 mm RHA / 90 deg.). Yet, there is the factor of spall, which is non-linear. i.e light calibers, 37mm and similar, will do very little to no spall, or require dozens of rounds to disable the crew, yet heavier calibers deal spall, enough to decimate the crew, even with 1 or 2 hits. Considering post-WW2 ballistic experiments, secondary effects of armor penetrating rounds is quite significant, damaging sights and the gun barrel, preventing turret traverse or gun elevation, etc. we can assume a non-linear increase of 'secondary damage', and that by increasing both armor and AP, we don't get a 'linear' outcome (round glances off like it's nothing). The 88mm from the KwK43 or PAK43 is one of them, soviet tests confirmed this against the Tiger 2's frontal armor, and if not penetrating, will easily spall the later IS-2's frontal armor. Soviet measurement on 88mm from KwK43/PAK43 against sloped armor resulted in at least 105mm / 30 degree slope and 120mm at 35 degrees (mid-hardness), at apr. 500m, deal easily with the T44 from afar. The APCR Rounds have very little effect on sloped armor, so we can take them out from the calculation.
