How Ilia Topuria Killed the King - The Fight Primer

Ilia Topuria was not the most battle-tested property in the UFC, yet when he got his chance to be locked in a cage with one of the all time greats of mixed martial arts, he did not waste a second.

I mentioned this last time you discussed the fight, but I think you *might* (not sure) be missing something from the knockout. If you look at the replay from other angles, Topuria throws a right to the body, left hook up top, and then right hook up top. Once Volk is on the fence, Topuria throws his right hook up top, then just barely frames with his left hand on the left side of Volk's face. This may have made Volk think he had an opening to throw his right hook because Topuria just touched him on the left again and should therefore be retracting his right arm, and he would beat Topuria to the next punch (be it a left or right, or a pause) and thus throws his own right hook. And that's when Topuria smacks him with the KO right that's cocked and ready to go. It really doesn't look like Volk is reaching for a collar tie in that moment -- he's throwing a closed fist at the approximate place of Topuria's chin. What do you think?

I'll take the like as a "you may be learning yet, young padawan." If this is something Topuria does to throw of guys' instincts while in the pocket, it's insanely sneaky. Are there other fighters ever seen using such tactics in the pocket? I've only started noticing this kind of shit after listening to Slack the Mack for so long. It's also brilliant if intentional because the left arm framing keeps his distance from the fighter squared up against the cage and somewhat blocks his chin on the left side, while also putting his right side even further back in case the other fighter throws a left instead of a right. All the while keeping his right hand cocked to fire immediately. He's not in the pocket at all and completely aware and largely protected, while the other guy is fighting off of pocket instinct while off-balance. To be clear, I don't just mean framing on the same side of the face you're going to punch, which happens all the time; I mean lightly touching/framing very quickly mid-combo to get your opponent to think you've thrown something you didn't.

Great read. Really liked how you wrapped it up in the end

I think I remember him using that frame to move to a better angle to land the right cross as well as briefly obscuring volk's view. Like you said, making volk think he had thrown or was doing something else on top of that, well spotted!
