Alright boys, I remembered early this time. Let me have your suggestions for:

- Gameplan of the year

- Technical Turnaround (Most Improved Fighter)

- Breakout Technique

- "...But Why?" Award for Piss Poor Fight IQ

Comments

Alberto

Gameplan: Max Holloway vs Justin Gaetje. He fought similar to as he always does, but the increased concentration on kicking the body (+ that perfectly placed spin kick) really paid off and made Gaetje's output much lower than usual.

joe salkeld

For but why, Alonso Menifield game planning to counter Carlos Ulbergs power by headbutting his fist as fast as he could

XCROSSMAXIMUS A

But why? - Turner walking away from an almost finished Moicano

Henry steer

Game plan - maybe max vs Justin, technique - teeps to leg while kicking or advancing, technical turnaround - money moacnio, low iq - turner just not following up on mocanio or Kron Gracie

Alberto

But why?: Johnathan Martinez vs Marcus McGhee by not pushing the pace in the last round even though he had McGhee limping and had lost the first two rounds. Although this award might be more appropriate for his corner, which told him the fight was tied into R3.

Ben Raphael

Technical Turnaround: Crisp boxing and takedown defense...Buckley is actually a solid candidate for this award

moritz seifert

Gameplan of the year: Belal staying on Edwards in their title fight taking all the learnings from their first fight. But why? Kron Gracie saying he’ll mix it up and then still pulling guard

Matthias Lim

Not related to any of the questions but will you be doing a pod on KSW, Oktagon, RISE x Glory, and RIZIN?

Don Schub

But why? - The Rock at Wrestlemania not knowing the Undertaker would stand behind him after hearing the Gong.

Cosmo Reverb

"But why?" should go to Gane for selling out on a kimura and another heel hook against Volkov

Shrimpy

Said it last year, I’ll say it again. Breakout technique, whizzer kick off being pressed against the cage. Not just for a takedown but to create space to exit and circle off.

Michael Owens

Honestly can’t really contribute to this because I am so checked out of MMA (and I work for a promotions) but I am looking forward to hearing the results. Semi serious why? Is Jamahal Hill. For thinking he could stand with Alex Also for his social media game plan

Tisats

Technique: that cross-body ride that Khamzat has done for a while seems to be catching on.

matt

Technique of the year: committing 2/3 fouls per fight

Francesco Carboni

Gameplan of the year could be moicano looking to catch the body kick and travel to the back instead of going for a double, and also in general how ready he was for everything BSD had to offer grappling wise especially because he smoked him as an underdog, simple and short but extremely effective. Another one could be Erceg vs pantoja who also candidates for the But why award because of the terrible decision making in Round 5. Most improved fighter might have to go to buckley, he finished guys who are kinda washed but he went from a journeyman middleweight to a top 5 WW in a year… Breakthrough technique nominations be overhook throws against the fence, 1-2 headkicks ( more appropriate for last year but I don’t remember if they did get nominated), also perhaps close side body kicks like Holloway vs gaethje, umar vs cory, also o’malley vs merab if I recall correctly, DDP vs Izzy, and probably many other less relevant fights that don’t immediately come to mind, but this is always the hardest one for me because it’s hard to choose between what changes at the top level in the meta, and what actually changes for most of the roster because those are often very separate things, usually the breakthrough technique for most of the roster is the breakthrough technique of the prior year for the top guys…. Edit: close side both kicks in both closed and open stance matchups…

Tisats

Gameplan and "But why": Jones holding out for the Stipe fight.

Angus Bhattacharya

Gameplan of the year: Yan vs Figueredo Holloway vs Gaethje Moicano vs Saint-Denis? Hermansson vs Pyfer? Ian Garry vs Shavkat? Even in a losing effort Technical Turnaround: It was a small sample size but Doo Ho Choi could be a good choice But why..? Circle Gane dropping for Heelhooks AGAIN

Cameron Baker

Technical turnaround: Doo Ho Choi or Buckley But why: Bruno Ferreira forgetting takedowns exist in the third round against Abus and getting submitted for it.

Darren Urschel

"but why?" - Jalin Turner walking away from a knocked down Moicano. This was a piss poor decision, but also was influenced by his previous fight (near murder) with Bobby Green

aric coleman

But why for menifield running face first onto a known counter puncher and getting blown up

Angus Bhattacharya

After reading some of the comments yeah breakout techniques: The legalisation of fouls by refs seemingly doing less about them

Callum Corbett

Technique of the year: Throwing a naked calf kick in the first 30 seconds and getting punched in the face But Why: Alonzo Menifield sprinting at Carlos Ulberg for no reason and getting left hooked immediately

Jordy

Technical turnaround - Doo Ho Choi But why? - Cyril Gane for everything in that Volkov fight or Kron Gracie Game plan - Topuria against Volkanovski, using pressure, footwork and feints to corral Volk against the cage

allaboutyourblahblah

Gameplan - Muhammed vs Edwards, Moicano vs Saint-Denis, Volkov vs Pavlovich, Hernandez vs Pereira

Joel Armstrong

Breakout technique: Head outside single leg variations. Namely the Malkoun (no can defend), Almabayev's head outside single into the crackdown (shelves the leg really nicely to kill the hip heist) and clear his inside arm. Honorable mention to Miranda Maverick for having absolutely no clue what to do in the crackdown despite seemingly having a whole gameplan built around getting there.

grge1212

But why: jiri vs Pereira 2, jiri deciding to not learn to check against a known calf kicker who he already fought and got calf kicked to death in.

Kmath

Chase hooper for technical turnaround / most improved

Kmath

Kron Gracie butscooting / jumping guard for the ...but why? Award

Malcolm La Prairie

Breakout technique: Chris Weidman 1-2 eyepoke Gameplan of the Year: Kron Gracie Technical Turnaround: Alexa Grasso

Ross

Breakout technique - Carlos prates smoking ciggies and below average welterweights

Ross

but why award to jiri for doing exactly the same against pereira as the first fight. or ciryl gane for chasing leg locks

Marco L

Breakout technique has to be Jones ability to circle off the cage to avoid a unification bout

Mario Winkel

"But why?" For bobby green shooting on paddy

Phillogrisser

But why? Either kron gracie pulling guard or Gane going for a leglock like he is Ryan Hall

Andy Leavy

Technique of the year: Gillian Robertson's anal penetrating elbow. Technical Turnaround: Chase Hooper But Why?: Kron Gracie Gameplan of the year: I'm not too sure, let's say Moicano vs Saint Denis

Ethan Taggart

technical turnaround joaquin buckley

Sean Gleeson

But why: 205ers refusing to wrestle with Alex Pereira

Thomas Belanger

Game plan of the year: Yan vs figgy,Belal vs Edwards, merab vs O malley Most improved fighter:Renato Moicano But why:Jalin Turner absolutely fumbling his knockdown of moicano for trying to have a walkoff ko

DylieWylie

But why: Erceg deciding to grapple in the last round against Pantoja

Shane Carter

But why has to be UFC for booking Nick Diaz multiple times

Kieran Edwards

Breakout technique might just be cheating at this point

Cam

Jonathan martinez getting the but why reward for nearly finishing mcghee, then doing nothing

Mark Capewell

But Why Award: Turner vs Moicano. Actually shouted the words "But Why!" at my tv when it happend, swiftly followed by hysterical laughter

Valtteri Nivala

Game plan: Dustin Poirier (jumping gillies against Saint Denis and showing Islam that he is an easy opponent to manhandle, while secretly learning a good antiwrestling gameplan and giving Islam hell of a war)

Valtteri Nivala

Technical turnaround: Dricus Du Plessis (fans and analysts turning around on the fact that being technical is not that important if tactics and ability to BONK is good enough)

Ayyub Ali

gameplan of the year cyril gane bribing the refs

JJ

Gameplan: Dustin poirier vs makhachev - didn't win but made improvements from khabib fight and didn't even jump guillotine Most Improved: not sure if its a full turaround but youssef zalal had a fantastic year Piss poor fight IQ: kron gracie

Lefty Headlock

Gameplan - Merab vs O’Malley because I hate O’Malley lol

Luke Z.

Gameplan: Belal’s title win TechTurnaround: Satoshi Souza’s hands ButWhy: The Bite or Onama vs JSP for the sloppy grappling Breakout Technique: not finishing your opponent due to the new gloves or max holloways spin kick 😉

Patrick

Gameplan: Dustin and/or Cory are tempting for basically the same reason (massively improved defensive grappling), but I'm not sure that was a gameplan so much as them having worked on a known hole in their game, and finally having opponents who would highlight that. Tech Turnaround: Eryk Anders for learning how to finish takedowns (still waiting on that film room/FCG), or Chase Hooper filling out and learning to strike & wrestle effectively. Breakout Technique: Double-Fouls (Weidman/Silva, Marcos/Yanez). If you know you've got at least 1-3 free unpunished instances of fouling, why just commit one at a time? Alternatively, training at Fighting Nerds. But Why?: Kron seems like recency bias, might instead say Mokaev and Kape getting into a bunch of shit before their fight only to put on a relatively tepid performance. Also Mokaev apparently being enough of a dick behind the scenes he got cut off a 7 fight win streak in the UFC.

Fourniers Schrodonger

But why?… can’t be Kron. He just sucks ass it’s not his fault. It should be menifield sprinting into a Carlos ulberg left hook

T Gr

The but why award for chandler olives 2, Instead of coming out and doing what damn near won him the fight/belt the first time he decides he's gonna come out and stand at range and out kickbox olivera over 5 rounds. Also as a side note I hate how did the double slam in the end to try and get people to remember that instead of his shitty performance.

Cameron Baker

Another shout for but why: Piera Rodriguez getting herself DQ’d while dominating Ariane Carnelossi

slangyman

But why: got to be Anthony Smith's gameplan to get hit as much as possible to feel something

Some Dude

May not be breakout technique of the year but the Doo ho choi masterclass and those lead uppercuts are worth a shout

Django Coyote

Technical turnaround has to be either Zalal or Buckley for me

Justin

But why: Ian Garry’s corner using his second language as opposed to English whilst giving corner advice

Paul Folson

But Why- Jalin Turner drops Moicano, doesn’t follow up because of Herb Dean running in from across the ring and stopping an inch away from the fighters but not ACTUALLY STOPPING THE FIGHT( which has been discussed on this podcast) Turner doesn’t follow up, realizes that Sneaky Herb pulled a fast one, but it’s too late and he loses the fight

Tré Vermeulen

Technical Turnaround: Kyle Nelson Gameplan of the Year: Ian Garry putting on the rash guard and knee braces for MVP or Jack Hermannson range and tempo on Pyfer ...But Why?...: Dolidze doing absolute fuck all every time he got a clinch on Imavov Breakout Technique: head in cage hand fighting

Tré Vermeulen

Sorry, technical turnaround could be Virna Jandiroba

Sebastian

Not sure if its a breakout technique but I really liked Belals lead hand uppercut when Leon Edwards was shelling up, haven’t really seen that a whole lot in MMA until recently

Daniel Lim

Technical turnaround: Thug Rose for turning around and going from good to bad.

MaybeEatTheRich

Probably worth you mentioning if Buckley is a technical turnaround or just making the move to a weight class that suits him.

Justin

Imagine being punched in the face for 5 minutes then actually having to break down what your coach is saying to you, I’m not sure if you’re bilingual but it’s objective fact your brain will breakdown what you’re being told in your primary language easier and faster, it’s Gary’s decision to have the specific people in his corner that speak Brazilian, doesn’t make it any less efficient Maybe you should think about your comments before you post them 🙂

Will

- Gameplan of the year: Petr Yan mixed the martial arts in high volume against Figgy so that the attacks which didn't work could give way to attacks which would work. He has a way of focusing on control via output that is, to me, either unique or simply done more masterfully than anyone else in the UFC. I agree that he may possess the deepest skillset in the sport right now. - Technical Turnaround (Most Improved Fighter): Chase Hooper has shown clear improvement in his striking on the level of mechanics especially, growing into someone who can chain-wrestle well enough that his sensational jiu jitsu can shine. He has a clear mind for learning and developing and has a fucktonne of great years ahead of him. I have a hard time imagining him doing well against the elite of Lightweight because of his athletic limits. But the fact remains that his improvement this year has been conspicuous. - Breakout Technique: I have no fucking idea - "...But Why?" Award for Piss Poor Fight IQ: Kron Gracie's entire MMA career

Paul Folson

August,we know they are Brazilians and that’s why they aren’t speaking English. But it’s hard translating, especially a language you haven’t spoken your whole life, and double especially when you’re in the middle of a fight.

Paul Folson

Buckley is a pretty good answer . Although “Django Coyote” could be the breakout technique. Excelllent name sir Edit: I thought that was a 10th planet sweep

Harry Russ

But why? low key might be Leon Edwards backing himself to the fence against Belal despite successfully NOT doing that the first fight where he was winning pre eyepoke, and that essentially always being the biggest problem with his entire approach to fighting throughout his career up until the moment he KO'd Usman in that first title win. He's 33. He's great at fighting. Why the fuck is he still backing himself onto the fence in the division that pretty much solely features fence grapplers at the top of the ranks who pretty much only score by pushing their opponent to the fence to work their offense?

Neil Peart, Lord of Drums

Gameplan of the Year: Ya girl Gillian Robertson throwing 12-to-6 anal elbows. No rule against it and novel use of a newly-legalized technique!

Neil Peart, Lord of Drums

The Django Coyote is a government conspiracy to splice coyotes with clones of Jaime Foxx, uncovered by Eddie Bravo in his all-consuming quest for the TRUTH!! Edit: It's also how we found out that Django Coyotes were actually responsible for 9/11. At that point, the Django Coyote program was in its nascent stages, and it all went tits up when a gang of them escaped from Area 2,384, which was located in the basement of one of the Towers. That's why the government decided to use their mind-control chips upon the escapees to destroy the Towers, in the hope that it would cover up evidence of the program. while still allowing them to run it by not destroying the basements. Jet fuel can't melt fifty feet of concrete and steel casing 200 feet below ground. But nothing gets past Eddie!

FH

Game plan of the year: 2-1 underdog Moicano neutralising the physicality & body kicks of BSD to beat the piss out of him. But why: Micheal Chandler

Westy

Technical Turnaround - Doo-ho Choi. Maybe there are fighters that have made bigger improvements in the last 12 months, but to come back after military service and having not won a fight since 2016? Taking that beating from Cub, getting chinned twice and seemingly found out? To come back after all that, at the age of 33 and look as good as he has this year is genuinely remarkable imo. But why - Khalil Rountree deciding to have a kickboxing fight with a Glory Champion at altitude and not even trying a td or trip to ‘put on a show’ was probably not the best idea, especially considering it will probably be his one and only chance at the belt (which he didn’t really deserve anyway). Bonus ‘but why’ would be Aldo taking a fight at 4000ft above sea level, against a really solid but relatively unknown/low-ranked opponent.

Leo

Breakout technique: elbows to the back of the head Edit: I'm not even joking.

Andy

Gameplan of the year - moicano vs bsd Technical turnaround - Buckley Has he just beaten old men to trick me into this? Breakout technique - calling out retired fighters But why - jiri vs pereira 2. Terrible fight iq didn't address any issues from the first fight competently. Davy grant gets an award for being sick af. .

Drakes Cakes

Is the But Why award Holm still refusing to Kickbox and then clinch the most decorated Judoka in American history in Kayla Harrison?

No cheeses for meeses

Gameplan of the year: Topuria vs Volkanovski Technical Turnaround: Joaquin Buckley, honorable mention Charles Johnson Breakout technique: sprinting in the opposite direction But Why: isn’t that every Michael Chandler fight?

Neil Peart, Lord of Drums

But Why Award: Chito Vera for refusing to do anything despite getting the absolute shit kicked out of him for five straight rounds. We're used to him not doing anything for the first two of three rounds, but we're not used to seeing him get absolutely shellacked for a whole five and thinking, "the judges will give me the fight for my amazing new defensive system of blocking every strike with my face and body." Edmon Tarverdyen could have coached him to make better decisions just by shouting, "head movement!" What an embarrassment.

Neil Peart, Lord of Drums

Choi was my boy from his first UFC fight. I was convinced he was what he was at this point, but man did he prove me wrong last fight. I was also convinced that the Swanson fight might have been one of those "he was never the same again" fights. Should have won a new award for "Negligent Cornering Award" for not throwing in the towel a minimum of at least ten times. Also, man is he was one of those Asians who doesn't age. He still has that adorable baby face! That man is 33 and been in absolute wars? You've got to be kidding me!

Michael Walsh

Hard not to pick Kron Gracie for poor fight IQ.

Leo

Really depends on how used you are to speaking it, and I think they speak portugese to him because they always speak portugese to him bc that's how they communicate. We don't even know if they speak much English or are used to speaking it.

Jack Howard

Gameplan: Merab v Sean Turnaround: Do Bronx (high guard, wrestling) But why: Kron pulling guard Breakout tech: pointing at the centre of the octagon

Harry Lewis

Breakout Technique: Buying Podcast Equipment and getting a draft kings sponsorship as a fighter But Why: see above but consider the level of concussions and dodgy blokes in mma who now have the ability to weaponise podcast equipment Gameplan of the year: having an omedov surname and throwing some kicks to make people thing you’re ‘the complete package’ Breakout technique #2: Pointing to the center of the octagon then waiting to counter (Manel Kape and others)

Joshua Hettinger

Breakout technique: 12-6 elbows from high back control (i.e. too high to secure the choke). Turns a kinda stally position into a valid ground and pound attack.

Oscar Gunnarsson

Breakout technique: Osoto gari on a raised lead leg like Petr Yan and Jon Jones did their last fight. It’s hard to get osoto in grappling but seems to be the shit in mma.

Paul Folson

Oh idk….i thought after getting smashed for the first ten minutes, he really had a shot at an armbar in the third.

Paul Folson

I mentioned this. Definitely Herb Deans fault. Dr Slack has discussed this habit of his on the podcast

Onta Dojo

Breakout technique: I've seen more people getting the body triangle on the back and then coming up on top into "body triangle mount" and landing GNP. Moicano wrecked BDS with it and Taira was doing it against Royval. I remember you pointing out Crelinsten doing it in Combat JJ a few years back, and I've been killing guys in the gym with it ever since. Surprised it's taken so long to become popular given how hard it it to handfight to the RNC with mma gloves on, and how often we see guys successfully stall out the round with someone on their back.

snake thepeg

But why?.. Dustin poirier trying to guillotine saint Dennis as his main defense

Fionn Ó Dubhairle

Did the Jacob Malkoun single leg already get mentioned for breakout technique last year? If not, definitely that. Also, looking at records to find this, I found Phil Hawes' nickname is 'no hype' which is both unfortunate and really fucking funny

Jordan Fulton

Gameplan: Chris Weidman with his plan to attack Bruno Silva's eyes. Worked like a charm. HES STILL MY BOY!!!

Gabe

Breakout Technique: Whizzer throws to get off the cage

Calum Robertson

Game plan- Volkov for using a lot more pressure in gane rematch

syzygy

Yeah that’s a really good shout. Kron’s gameplan is fine for someone who literally only has jiu jitsu. It’s bad training IQ not learning how to adapt it for MMA

Holzken Fiziev

Gameplan:O'Malley vs Merab But why: Vitor Petrino vs Smith

Edward

Game plan OTY: Belal's perfection of wrestle boxing along the fence to shut down Leon Edwards, building in adjustments that he and his team had learned from watching Usman vs Edwards.

Skippydop

But why?: Grasso using attempted gillys off her back as a takedown defense Break out technique: Weidman’s 1-2 with eye pokes

Lead Left Hoof

But why : Steve Erceg spamming takedown attempts in R5, getting swept by Pantoja and losing the deciding round Gameplan : Topuria being composed and patient to defuse and find the killshot on two of the best featherweights to ever do it back to back Technical turnaround : Moicano coming back from that streak of KO losses and implementing his BJJ better than ever

George Quinn

Breakout technique, jailton almeida refusing to strike

Chris

I think there’s a 25% chance he knew he could finish Benoit on the feet whenever he felt like it, so he was hoping to finally get a guillotine submission. When that failed, he decided to go for the finish on the French version of Paddy Pimblet

Chris

But why: that fighter who bit another fighter; also Brendan Allen vs Imavov and Turner vs Moicano and Menifield vs Ulberg Breakout technique: illegal strikes: fighters are learning that they can get away with increasingly more without being punished. Gameplan: Dustin Poirier for not jumping guillotines against Makhachev Technical Turnaround: Dustin Poirier for not jumping guillotines against Makhachev
