Royler's loss to Sakuraba happened because his submission defense amounted to "try and stall for the last 90 seconds of the fight so it would go down as a draw." The referee (probably Yuji Shimada) rightly said "fuck that" and decided that stalling without actually trying to escape the submission didn't constitute intelligent defense.
