I think you're spot on with "Good fights and accessibility" being the key for a promotion trying to grow. The thing that really got me into MMA was WEC on Versus. I was kind of interested in UFC, but didn't know anyone else who watched at the time and didn't want to give my parents $50 or whatever and beg them to buy me a PPV. But WEC was essentially free, the televised cards only had like four fights on them so they whizzed by, the fights were usually balls to the wall bangers, and I immediately got sucked into the meta story because the first one I tuned into had WEC golden boy Urijah Faber, who was plastered all over the show and the adverts and shit, getting his shit rocked by Mike T. Brown in Round 1 and losing the Featherweight Championship. I laughed and laughed and laughed at what were clearly the promoter's best laid plans going south and I was a diehard WEC fan from that moment.
