What happened to the historical pods talking about the Heavyweight title? Are those findable?

People just love to watch fight even if it's two bums fighting over a chip, one actually put on a pretty damn good card, they know they can't directly go head to head with the UFC but if they get some more MMA talent and keep mixing in the world class Thai and kickboxers they will continue to improve, tang kai is a good MMA talent regardless of promotion and still extremely young

JACK, I made a Jack Slack podcast bingo board/drinking game should I email it to you?

What a coincidence, I was just planning to message you about your opinion on the condemnation of all rhythm stepping- another thing about Coach Barry is his universal disdain for the L-step. His claim, as I understand it, is that initiating lateral movement with the foot opposite of the direction you're intending to move is *never* effective and often puts fighters in bad positions. I'd be curious to hear your thoughts! His social media content populates my feed often and it always feels odd to hear such universal condemnations of 2 footwork options- surely there are *some* good uses for any tool?

I haven't listened to the episode yet, but I am also curious about Jack's opinion on Barry Robinson. I've been meaning to ask. I understand why rhythm stepping is wrong with the habitual stance breaking and predictability leaving you vulnerable, but I don't understand why he hates L steps either. I don't know enough about proper movement and feel like I'm missing a foundational piece of info. I'd love Jack to review/analyse/comment on Coach Barry's stuff.

Max Thoreson

Yeah exactly, I'm really not sure. Lead foot back, rear foot out has to be slower than just rear foot out- in terms of how quickly your body shifts laterally. So if that's the only metric than I suppose I understand why L steps are not ideal. But I just know so many fighters L step, I'd be at least a little surprised if they were just... never advantageous, regardless of the context of the fight. Don't some fighters also use rhythm steps as a false tell to get reactions & set traps? Set the rhythm, set the rhythm, ~disrupt rhythm~? I'm not experienced enough of a fighter to know if these are just generally bad ideas with rare, unlikely pay-offs or legitimate tools that can be used effectively

Trevor Whittman in his secrets of champion balance teaches that the L-Step, Reset step and reverse L-Step are used to regain balance and hide entries. He says the natural way that people evade punches is by pulling thier head back away from thier base and these "rhythm steps" are a way to regain your balance and reset distance without pulling the head back.

Matt

Ahh! I think I get it now. Barry is extremely against bad habits in training, and loves perfecting basics. Repeated motions in training will become instincts in the fight. Both the rhythm step and L step mean pulling your lead foot back, next to your rear. You're stationary, predictable and vulnerable. In Barry's movement videos, and Trevor Whitman's L step videos they both emphasize switching feet very quickly. Like an Ali Shuffle. Quick swap and then move as fast as possible. I guess the traditional L step is too slow/vulnerable for Barry's liking? Thanks both of you! (Side note, I discovered Barry via Luke Thomas. Both of them take a million words before getting to their points 😂)

I think you misunderstood. In Trevor Whittman's Balance DVD, he wants his fighters to use the L-step, and "rhythm step" as a way to regain balance as well as change positions. Barry is completly wrong about the rythym step.

James Kendrick

Whittman even explains the "rythym step" (or as he calls it the a reset step) is a way to bait your opponent into taking up the space you have given up. Barry teaches to step into that space while Whittman teaches to counter that step. Whittman teachings > Barry teachings
