Feels kind of ridiculous to redesign Emily and Javier again but I’ve been hesitating from dabbling more in that series. For a while I wasn’t sure quite why, but I chanced upon a twitter rant from a graphic novelist that really hit home.

I forget the exact words but essentially it was: you have to simplify your art style for longer works, otherwise you’re going to risk burning out before you start.

Obviously it’s possible to create very detailed graphic novels. But often in those cases they’re created by an actual team of people. Pencilers, inkers, colorists, background artists, writers , editors... etc etc

Not to mention I actually prefer simpler comic styles anyway?

I admire detailed comics and gave a healthy number of them in my collection but ultimately the ones I find myself re-reading the most are the ones that blend simplicity with detail.

But to be totally honest? Before I dabble much more with design I’ve got to WRITE the actual outline. I know how it starts. I know the characters. No idea what’s in the middle or end. 😅
