Every now and then I find myself having a familiar conversation with folks who want to stop using gendered (masculine) language conversationally. Words like guys, man, dude etc.

They kind of kick themselves over it.

So I'm going to start writing tickets. $25 per citation.

I am terrible about this. Being from central Cali, everything from my cat to the wall I just walked into is "dude." I do try to be better if someone specifically says "hey, I personally don't like that, please don't call me dude" but I think using it as a general term is here to stay.

Korean students often ask me if "guys" is a gendered term. It seems to me that the word is losing its genderedness, but it isn't quite there yet. For now I advise them to use a gender-neutral alternative. We'll check back to see how the English language is doing in 20, 50, or 100 years.

You'll receive your tickets in the mail but feel free to pay your bills online. guys.gov/billing

I wanna create a list of alternatives that starts sensibly with words like "friend, babe, citizen" and ends with "Reductive Unimatrix Carbon Filtration System"
