On the third day of my vacation I shaved off my beard and used it to make a mask.

Impressed?

This isn't the finished piece. It's loosely titled "Until I'm Blue in the Face."

It's about the anger that comes with being identified male because I have facial hair.

What I learned on vacation:

I need to take it easier. Stepping away from social media was so freeing that honestly I didn't want to come back to it. I'm going to listen to that feeling.

While on vacation I reconnected with a good friend from college. He's the guy that got a free ride for college, grad school, and a doctorate - he's that smart. He works as a professor.

His current expertise (taken from the college website) are: Environmental planning and management, Environmental policy, Watershed  science and management, Stream restoration and naturalization, Political  ecology, Critical physical geography.

He taught himself to play the Mandolin just for fun last year.

During one of our conversations he spoke to me about teaching his students to "work smarter not harder" and honestly that was such a wake up call.

That's what I'm going to do. Work smarter. Not harder.

Anyway, I challenged him to a game of chess, which we played over the phone.

I mated him in 48 minutes without losing a piece.

Now are you impressed?
