Installed: 4/22/18

Collapse: 7/3/21

I was showing my friend Brendan the site where I had found my root of Black Oak, when (perhaps from that very same tree) we salvaged two heavy slabs of bark.  He drove his parent's van at the time, we shoved them inside and took them back to my place where they rested against the house.  Now he drives a pickup.

The first half I buried on the 21st.

All things considered the pieces lasted longer than I anticipated.  I had figured maybe one year, tops.  Over time the wood warped, and I loved how it remained dry during a downpour because of its shape.  Everything would be drenched except for these solitary poles of Black Oak.

I figured I was the only one in my family that truly loved the installation, but I was wrong.

Coffee loved to scramble up and gaze down at the garden.  And—in fact—it was her who toppled the first piece.  No injuries, thank goodness!

Putting together these photos was a wistful experience, but I'm so pleased overall.  I still have the pieces, they've only shortened themselves.  Eventually I'll re-bury them when I figure out where they belong next.

Blessings.

Each and every last one of my installations is designed to either decay naturally, or be removed easily. Permanence is not an ambition of mine.
