CONTENT WARNING: venting, medical fuckery
Not sure why I initially went with a blue background for this graphic. The black is much more striking.
August 16th I got my feedback survey from the University of Rochester (UR) regarding my varicocelectomy. Clear as day the form needed updating:
I had previously spoken with my therapist regarding my treatment, and she's filing my grievances with the facility. The survey—however—was my first time letting them know directly how I felt. I have a follow up appointment with Urology on September 14th, and I'll bring it up again then.
What I've learned is that the UR has had major problems. Though they are the largest and best funded medical provider in the area, there is much turnover. Many areas are understaffed, and some of their systems are completely broken, most notably their phones. Over the summer hundreds (perhaps thousands) of appointments were dropped because small teams of people working from home were tasked with appointment booking without training.
My Alex was one of those people. After waiting three months for an intake assessment she was informed her appointment was never made, and that they'd be booking in November. I made calls for three days, crawled right up their ass, until they relented—apologized—and shortened her wait to just a month.
In addition to this sensitivity/inclusion training continues to be a major sticking point. Some of the administrative turnover is actually due to resistance to said training with folx who would rather work elsewhere than learn about pronouns, inclusive mental health awareness, and especially racism.
No doubt Covid-19 has a big role to play in this, but the UR has a long history of failing their Non-White, Non-Abled, Non-Straight/Cis patients.
I never noticed this when I was closeted. Bigger fish to fry. Now it's painfully obvious, and what's interesting is Alex is actually in charge of training teams of UR staff through the Gandhi Institute. I won't out anyone, but there is MUCH work to be done.
Urology has a new Administrator as of July and my therapist is working with him to put out the fires, and raise the department standards.
I have to take a break today.
Frustrating, but I must listen to my body which is telling me to pump the brakes.
BLAH.
