Before Reginald Barclay, there was Sonya Gomez.

Gomez struggled with Anxiety before it was cool, and managed to spill hot chocolate all over (and then feel up) Picard on her first day in Engineering.  To me Gomez is a nod to all the brilliant, hard working, spirited ladies out there trying their best while also being incredibly awkward.
