The first engineer was rejected, because he talked about his previous illegal project. Gus wants strict silence. If anyone is a talker, Gus will silence them. The series makes no further mention of the first engineer, but I would not be surprised if Gus has him killed, before he mentions to anyone else about this strange project to build a lab below a laundromat. We all know how cold and calculating Gus is!
